An oasis in Fargo’s north
On a map, Northport looks like it could be a busy place to live – situated just east of Hector International Airport and a mile northwest if North Dakota State University, and only a couple of miles from downtown. But according to longtime residents like Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest, “It feels like a small-town community, you get that small-town quiet feel, so it really feels like this oasis outside of town a little bit but it’s not, it’s still in town.” Part of this is thanks to the age of the community, as it is one of the more established suburbs in the region, while another part is the Yunker Farm Park tract that offers a tree-lined buffer area between the residential area and the busier commercial area surrounding the airport. It’s a neighborhood of shaded side streets where children walk to school, where families gather in backyards to watch the Fargo AirSho streak overhead or hear the concerts of downtown as the music cuts across the flat plains.
Mid-century homes under a canopy of trees
Homes in Northport are the result of the suburban boom of the 50s and 60s, with the ramblers and split-levels of the era being common. Low-sloping roofs with extended eaves are common for protected entryways, and while many homes have attached garages, they are single-stall and regular-sized two-stall versions, not the larger garages found in the newer suburbs. Most sit on a quarter acre or so of land shaded by matured elms and oaks, with larger front lawns that offer some distance from the quiet side streets. These older homes may require some maintenance up front but also comparatively lower pricing – the average sale price for the neighborhood is $60,000 below the Fargo average. Updated ramblers and split-levels sell for $200,000 to $400,000, while modern contemporary twin homes in the northwestern corner go for between $350,000 and $450,000. Rental apartments and townhouses are also an option, with a large apartment complex at the top end of Northport.

Leading elementary schools serve Northport students
Students in Northport are split across three elementary schools and may attend Longfellow, McKinley, or Washington Elementary School. These elementary schools are a draw for those looking to move to the area. “Longfellow Elementary has been rated the number one elementary school in the area for a long time,” says Buhr – Longfellow gets an A grade from Niche, while McKinley and Washington get a B-minus and a B, respectively. All three are within walking distance for many students, as McKinley is in the heart of the neighborhood, Longfellow is on the eastern border, and Washington is on the southern border. Students will move up to Ben Franklin Middle School, which gets a B-plus, before finishing up at North High School, which gets an A-minus and sits on the neighborhood's southern border as well.

The Thundering Herd to the southwest
North Dakota State University, often referred to as NDSU, sits just beyond the southwestern edge of the neighborhood. It is close enough that students who live in the neighborhood can walk from their home to class. This also accounts for the fact that there are more apartments and multi-family housing units than in some of the surrounding neighborhoods. It also can lead to more noise and traffic in that portion of the neighborhood, particularly during game days, move-in and move-out days, and events at the Fargodome. .

Hometown sports and outrageous deserts
In the center of the neighborhood, Hornbacher’s is a walkable grocery trip for many residents, for weekly shopping or quick popping out for last-minute necessities. Next door, Burggraf’s Ace Hardware provides home care needs. There are numerous dining spots in the southwestern corner, including Red Pepper Fargo, which is part of a local chain offering a mix of casual Mexican and American fare, most notably the unique taco meat grinders. Slammers Sports Bar is a popular spot for catching NDSU football away games or University of North Dakota hockey games. For Fargoans, though, The Shack on Broadway is one of the top breakfast destinations, with all-day homemade pancakes and homestyle breakfasts, finished off by coffee and their famous caramel rolls – “They have the biggest, gooiest caramel rolls you could ever dream of!” says Buhr.

An oasis, but with so much convenience
Getting around Northport and the north Fargo area is convenient for residents thanks to quiet side streets and a comprehensive network of sidewalks that makes it relatively bikeable and walkable. MATBUS routes 11 and 13 have stops around the neighborhood for public transit options, but most still rely on cars to get around for errands and their daily commute. Broadway and University Drive offer straight shots into downtown and Interstate 94, while 19th Avenue connects with Interstate 29. Hector International Airport is along the western border, and the terminals are only 3 miles away, less than a 10-minute drive. Despite this, the noise is not terrible – “We don’t hear the airport much here,” says Buhr. Sanford Emergency Center is less than 3 miles away and is usually reachable in 10 minutes or less by car for 24-hour health care. Fargo VA Health Care System Hospital is adjacent to the neighborhood for armed forces veterans.

Ribs and ruckus
With the Fargodome and the airport close by and downtown only 2 miles south, activities surround Northport year-round. In addition to NDSU Bison home games, the Fargodome hosts everything from monster truck jams to wrestling tournaments to Happy Harry’s RibFest in the parking lot, with live national acts and award-winning rib vendors over four days in June. The Fargo AirSho flies out of the airport, with demonstrations including the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels performing, often visible from the roofs and backyards of the neighborhood. From July through October, the Red River Market in downtown Fargo brings local producers together, selling everything from produce to baked goods to beverages and more.
