A south Fargo suburb convenient to the biggest employers in the city
Half residential, with a mixture of industrial and commercial, Pointe West is the epitome of a southern Fargo suburb. Homes with the ubiquitous Fargo modern traditional design line quiet side streets, while walking and biking paths lead to the surrounding neighborhoods and amenities. Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, lives in North Fargo but works in the middle of Pointe West. “People talk about five o’clock traffic; I don’t even think about that because it's not anything like five o’clock traffic in other places where they talk about rush hour. It’s not like Minneapolis where you might be spending an hour to get home…My commute, it takes me 15 minutes.” For those who make Pointe West their home, these commutes are even shorter as three of the largest employers in the region – Sanford Medical, Essentia Health and Microsoft – all have their top locations in adjoining communities.

Giving a nod to our Commander in Chief
Presidential names lend a dignified air to the neighborhood of twins and single-family homes, from the father of our country to lesser-known office holders. Plenty of Lincoln and Washington streets across the county exist, but Fillmore and Van Buren are a little less common – there are 13 streets in total named after a past president in Pointe West. Modern traditional ramblers and bi-levels are wrapped in neutral-shade vinyl siding set off with stone accents. Concrete driveways lead to front-facing garages, while young trees help to break up the flat landscape. Most homes sit on roughly a quarter of an acre, and privacy fences are common to keep pets and kids in the yard. Twin homes with two-stall garages generally sell for between $225,000 and $275,000. Single-family properties with three-stall garages – room for a boat, winter toys or snow removal gear – regularly get from $340,000 to $460,000, even if they may have less square footage than some of the twin homes. Over half of the housing in Pointe West is rental apartments found in multi-level buildings grouped together throughout the neighborhood.

A prime location along the highway for work and play
Residents of Pointe West can walk or bike to nearby attractions or out for a bite, but most are car dependent. The location is key for them – Interstate 29 runs along the eastern border, linking up with Interstate 94 a mile north. These two routes are key to keeping drive times down around the metro. There are limited stops for MATBUS routes 14 and 18 around the neighborhood, as public transit is constrained mostly to the downtown region. Roughly 7 miles away, it’s usually a 15-minute drive to downtown; Hector International Airport is the same distance, but the convenient location just off I-29 reduces travel down to 10 minutes at times. Both Sanford Medical Center and Essentia Health have 24-hour emergency care centers within 2 miles of the neighborhood.
MATBUS provides Pointe West residence with public transportation throughout the Fargo area.

Pocket parks and nearby fishing
Pointe West Park is a pocket park in the middle of the neighborhood, with swings, a climbing structure and green space for children to run and play. Nearby neighborhoods have plenty to offer within walking or biking distance as well – Parks Director Tony Schmitt highlights Trout Fest in Woodhaven North Pond, only a half mile south, as a popular family-friendly event. Both Woodhaven North and South Ponds are community fisheries, man-made ponds that are stocked yearly to allow community members to learn and practice their angling skills in a safe, walkable spot.

Plenty of nearby attractions for a day out
Being near family-friendly activities is a big draw of the neighborhood as well. The Red River Zoo is only a mile north, home to a variety of animals, including rare cold-weather critters – it also holds periodic events, including holiday light displays. SCHEELS Arena, home to the USHL’s Fargo Force, is a mile to the west. In the hockey offseason, the 5,000-seat arena also hosts concerts, comedians and more. Thunder Road meanwhile offers go-karts and laser tag to get the adrenaline pumping.

Morning treats for the sweet tooth
Sandy’s Donuts to the south is a slice of Fargo, a homegrown shop that is a regular morning stop for coffee and a pastry – from unique donuts celebrating Shark Week or the Red River Valley Fair to seasonal flavors like Mango Bismark and Cotton Candy Mochi. For dining out, American tavern favorites are on the menu; it’s the venue that’s up for debate. The Tavern Grill offers an easygoing, modern vibe, while JL Beers has more of a modern taphouse feel. Fargo Billiards and Gastropub offers similar fare, but the star of the show is the fifty billiards tables that make it a hotspot for hanging out in the colder months. Hornbacher’s is nearby for grocery needs, while West Acres Shopping Center, the largest indoor mall in the state, is only a few blocks north. West Acres is home to over 100 shops and services, along with a food court, the Roger Maris Museum and art displays highlighting artists from the surrounding region.

Citywide events bring Fargoans together
Localized events are rare, especially in the southern suburbs of Fargo – instead, Pointe West residents usually head into the heart of Fargo or West Fargo to mingle. It creates a festive, neighborly atmosphere at annual events like the Red River Valley Fair and the Downtown Fargo Street Fair in the summers. The winters get cold, but Frostival brings residents out for pond hockey, ice fishing, sledding and hot chocolate at parks across the city over a ten-day period in January.
