Of flooding and renewal
“There were some really cool neighborhoods that have been decimated, that have disappeared and are now city parks,” says Mary Schimke, Realtor with Archer Real Estate Services. Lions Conservancy Park is one such spot, sitting along the Red River. After the 1997 floods, the existing neighborhood was torn down, with only landscaping and driveways left – the Lions adopted the park and developed the property, building a rustic amphitheater and viewing stands which point toward the river and make it easy to spot native wildlife. In 2016, Audubon Dakota brought the park into the Urban Woods and Prairies Initiative as a part of conservation efforts and to fortify its migration corridor that supports over 20 species of birds. Streetlights and land scars from its past can still be seen, but now disc golfers and birdwatchers roam where families once picnicked in their backyards. It’s not free from flooding, and the river still creeps up the banks, but it hasn’t encroached beyond the berms in recent years. The Fargo-Moorhead Diversion project, expected to be completed in 2027, will move the valley into FEMA’s 500-year floodplain, nearly eliminating the likelihood of a repeat of 1997.Rose Creek Golf Course at the heart of the community
This neighborhood is also centered around the Rose Creek Golf Course, an 18-hole public course run by the Fargo Park District. A par 71 course, it’s structured for intermediate to advanced golfers and i’s home to mens, ladies and juniors leagues and offers an on-site PGA pro for lessons. It’s not the only golf course around the community – disc golfers can take to the course that runs along the river’s edge, which was recently established in 2023. Bikers can also enjoy the path that runs throughout the neighborhood, and residents can walk this path to access the playgrounds and fields in adjacent neighborhoods. Just north of the community, Discovery Park has tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields and a playground.Large homes, private lots
While a handful of townhouses can be found in Rose Creek, the neighborhood consists almost entirely of single-family homes. Built throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, these contemporary Traditional homes stand out from most in the southern Fargo area, in part thanks to the use of stone and brick instead of the usual vinyl siding. Houses are also much larger than most within the Fargo metro area – with those in Rose Creek averaging square footage of roughly 4,600 square feet, over twice the national average. All come with garages that have at least two stalls and extra storage space; some feature up to six stalls with a combination of attached and detached spaces. Well-sculpted bushes and meticulous landscaping face the streets, while backyards are enclosed by privacy fencing. Homes on the edges of this community generally sell for between $450,000 and $700,000, while those with golf course views generally sell from $600,000 to $1 million. Those within cul-de-sacs can top that mark and are among the largest homes in the neighborhood, with some sprawling over 8,000 square feet. Townhouse options generally sell for $575,000 to $650,000. Buyers should note that the Rose Creek Association governs the neighborhood with an annual fee of $300.Rose Creek is very car-dependent
“Public transportation is not common, but we do have a bus system,” says Danni Melquist, Director of Marketing for Visit Fargo-Moorhead, “most people who live here utilize a personal car.” There are no MATBUS stops convenient to Rose Creek, and it’s not walkable. Downtown Fargo is roughly 6 miles north, usually a 15-minute drive; while Hector International Airport is 10 miles north, the drive time is roughly the same, thanks to Interstate 29 providing a direct route. Bruce Johnson, Broker and Owner of RE/MAX Realty 1, points out that two of the largest employers in the region are nearby - Essentia Health is 3 miles to the northwest, usually within a 10-minute drive, while Sanford Medical Center is 7 miles northwest, regularly within a 15-minute drive. Both offer 24-hour emergency care. Atonement Lutheran Church is within the neighborhood's boundaries, while the spires of Saints Anne and Joachim Catholic Church rise just south.Eating out and grabbing groceries
CJ’s Tavern at Rose Creek is open year-round, even when the golf course is shuttered for the winter. The small menu includes burgers and other sandwiches, wings, appetizers and a variety of mac-and-cheese dishes, including Taco Mac and Pulled Pork Mac. Residents can swing by Red River Coffee for a morning brew – it’s been part of the Fargo area since 1985 and is one of the first local independent coffee shops. Next door, Frank’s Lounge also provides a slice of Fargo history and a menu full of pub fare, with the neon pink pussycat from Downtown Fargo’s Pink Pussycat Lounge lighting up the dining room. ALDI and a Walmart Supercenter are just down the road for groceries and household necessities.Top West Fargo schools and nearby private options
Students don’t have far to go for schooling. Centennial Elementary School and Discovery Middle School are located at the neighborhood's borders – some students can walk across the street to class. These schools get a B grade and an A-minus grade, respectively, from Niche. Davies High School also earns an A-minus from Niche while getting an A grade for extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs and activities. Across the southern border, Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School share a campus. For younger students, Nativity Elementary is the closest primary school within the St John Paul II Catholic School system. Oak Grove Lutheran School is another private option, with the elementary campus to the west and Grades 6 through 12 north of Downtown Fargo.Downtown Fargo is the events hotspot
Rose Creek residents head up University Drive to enjoy the festivities and events of the Downtown Fargo area. On the south side of downtown, Tony Schmitt with the Fargo Park District points to Island Park for the Island Park Show and Midwest Kids Fest. Melquist mentions the Downtown Fargo Street Fair as a major draw, with artists, vendors, chefs and more bringing their wares to Broadway Square for a three-day event. The Square also hosts the annual Broadway Square Tree Lighting, part of the numerous holiday festivities that include the Folkways Christkindlmarkt and the drive-through holiday lights at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds.
