Fargo’s southward expansion, driven by industrial growth
The continued development of the agtech, medical and education industries in Fargo has fueled three decades of growth. “Once you get below 13th Avenue South, everything is new within the past 25, 30 years,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest, a non-profit that offers educational sessions for first-time homeowners. “All that has been a crazy boom in 25 years.” One of the earliest neighborhoods to be a part of this boom, Southpointe used to be on the edge of the city’s expansion, but today, it's surrounded by subdivisions that continue to expand both southward and westward of town. One of the many benefits of this expansion is the community's proximity to nearby amenities like the elementary and middle schools, grocery stores and dining options that grew alongside the neighborhood. With a central bike path that connects Southpointe to nearby neighborhoods, it's also common to see residents out walking or biking during the few warm weeks of the Fargo summer.
The community of Southpointe lies in the greater Fargo area, and is close to most amenities.

Quiet streets hold homes exemplifying 90s suburbia
Twins and single-family homes sporting modern traditional designs, built from the 80s and 90s, line quiet side streets and cul-de-sacs in Southpointe. Quarter-acre lots are standard for single-family homes, and include fenced-in backyards, while some ramblers and split-levels sit in the shade of tall maple and elm trees. Most homes also feature decks or patios for grilling out in the summer; while others feature small above-ground pools for use during the warmer months. Prominent attached oversized two-car and three-car garages set the neighborhood apart from the older generations, as these styles became commonplace in the city during the early 1980s. Price points here range from $150,000 to $175,000 for a two-bedroom townhouse, while condos and three-bedroom townhouses can go for $300,000 to $400,000. Twin homes can go for $200,000 to $300,000, while most single-family homes sell for $250,000 to $525,000. Apartments are clustered along the northern edge of the neighborhood, rising three and four stories high.

Top schools within walking distance
According to Danielle Beilke, Realtor with Beyond Realty, students in Southpointe enjoy convenience for their early schooling. “The elementary and middle schools are very close, and centrally located,” she says. Eagles Elementary sits on the eastern edge of the community and gets a B-minus from Niche; Discovery Middle School is in the heart of the community and gets an A-minus. Fargo Davies High School also earns an A-minus and is rated by Niche as the best college prep public high school in the Fargo area. It offers 16 different sports along with nearly 40 student clubs and organizations ranging from the Gay-Straight Alliance to the Trap Shooting Club to a Robotics club. Oak Grove Lutheran School teaches pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students, with the elementary campus nearby and the North campus above downtown for secondary students. St. John Paul II Catholic Schools includes Sacred Heart Middle School and Shanley High School, both of which get B-plus grades from Niche; the closest Catholic elementary school for Southpointe students is Nativity Elementary School, a little over a mile north.

A bike trail connects pocket parks
The Milwaukee Trail splits through the center of the neighborhood, running north to Brunsdale and south to Rose Creek. It’s popular with runners and bicyclists and connects three mini-parks along the pathway that feature greenspace and playsets. Discovery Park is at the middle school, also along the path; basketball courts, multipurpose fields, trails and six tennis courts are open to the public. There are also indoor options for year-round use. “Courts Plus is more than just a fitness center, they offer daycare, a huge indoor playground that can be rented for birthday parties, multiple tennis courts, basketball and pickleball courts,” says Beilke, “It’s a great compound and locals love having it in their community.”

Southpointe residents are car-dependent
Along with the Milwaukee Trail, quiet side streets and dedicated bike lanes make the neighborhood great for recreational biking and walking. With retail and necessities nearby, residents sometimes use their bikes for commuting and errands in the summer months. Public transit is limited – stops for MATBUS route 14 are along 32nd Avenue. Most residents rely on their cars to get around throughout the year, and with University Drive along the east side of the neighborhood, they can make the 4-mile drive to downtown in 10 minutes or less. Hector International Airport is 8 miles north, usually a 15-minute drive or less, and is undergoing an expansion project to accommodate more daily flights – it’s expected to roughly double the size of the terminal and be finished in 2027. Liberty Lutheran Brethren Church on 32nd Avenue is within 2 miles of anywhere in the neighborhood – generally a five-minute drive or less – and provides 24-hour emergency care.

Nearby dining and shopping options
“There are so many food and retailer options nearby; this neighborhood lines 25th Street South and University Drive. You can find chain restaurants, coffee shops, fast food and local places like Woody’s – the options seem endless here,” says Beilke. Burgers and wraps feature alongside craft brews at the neighborhood pub, which is open from the morning to late at night. Royal Buffet provides Pan-Asian dishes in an all-you-can-eat buffet, while Café Aladdin and GP’s Greek Kitchen offer two different takes on Mediterranean cuisine. Fargo Cork’n Cleaver is a more formal spot, serving seafood and steak in a dark, cozy dining room. Hornbacher’s is right there for the weekly grocery trip; specialty retail, including Burlap Boutique’s vintage finds and Eckroth Music’s instruments, are mixed in near these dining spots.

Residents head north or west for city-defining events
As with many of the planned suburban neighborhoods in the south end of town, Southpointe doesn’t host events. Instead, the residents make the short trip north to the downtown area, with year-round events ranging from the Island Park Show to the Downtown Fargo Street Fair and the Folkways Christkindlmarkt at the Civic Center. A few blocks even further north, the FargoDome is home to Happy Harry’s RibFest, monster truck shows, comedians and musical acts. Heading west along 32nd Avenue South, SCHEELS Arena is home to the Fargo Force minor league hockey team and concerts; another 2 miles west is The Lights event center, home to concerts, KidChella, pro bull riding and more.
