West Acres - the heart of shopping, dining and entertainment in Fargo

Known for its shopping plazas and restaurants, West Acres is the heart of retail and dining in Fargo. While the area is primarily home to multifamily homes and apartments, residents lead an on-the-move lifestyle, trying new restaurants and exploring theme parks and attractions on the city's west side. "If shopping and dining is what you're looking for, this is a better area because you're a lot closer to it," says Kelly Mullaney, Realtor at Park Co. Realtors, who has lived in Fargo for over 40 years. "There are movie theaters, go-karts, trampoline parks and places to take your kids, plus an abundance of different restaurants to check out."

Shopping at the West Acres Mall and many restaurants

West Acres Mall is the heart of city retail, featuring over 100 stores, including JCPenney and American Eagle. Residents can dine at one of many eclectic restaurants in the area, including the HuHot Mongolian Grill and KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot. Lucky's 13 Pub serves bison burgers and stuffed tater tots, while the Porter Creek Hardwood Grill serves steak and seafood on an outdoor patio. There are multiple supermarkets within a 5-minute drive, such as Natural Grocers and ALDI, directly north on 13th Avenue. "It's a centralized location close to grocery stores, shopping and thoroughfares," Mullaney says.

Midwestern skies and multifamily housing

Between commercial buildings and hometown shopping centers, residents have unobstructed views of the landscape for miles below a big midwestern sky. The neighborhood is very walkable and has accessible bike routes, making it easy for residents to reach the surrounding shops, parks and restaurants. There are many townhouses and apartment complexes. Most people living in West Acres rent their units, and homes are rarely available for sale. According to data estimates, the average home value is around $185,000. "It's a good area, it's growing well, and there's a lot of entertainment," Mullaney says.

Similar to much of North Dakota, snow accumulation can reach up to 45 inches, and residents may need all-terrain vehicles. Winter storm conditions are common, and the average winter low is about 1°F. The region also experiences high winds and tornadoes, for which the county has disaster plans in place.

Attractions like a zoo, a cinema and movie memorabilia

The city is known for being the setting of the 1996 dark comedy Fargo, with movie props and celebrity memorabilia at the Visit Fargo-Moorhead center. The Red River Zoo is just a mile north, featuring 98 species of animals, including red pandas, otters, and alpacas. After checking out the animals, locals can catch a movie in reclining seats at the Marcus West Acres Cinema. The area offers many family-friendly activities nearby, including attractions like the Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Thunder Road is an amusement park with mini-golf, go-karts and laser tag.

Public schools offer career training and gifted programs

Willow Park Elementary School earns a C-plus. Cheney Middle School has a B-plus, and West Fargo High School receives a B. The West Fargo Public Schools District offers an active gifted and talented program, providing enrichment opportunities for high-performing elementary school students. High schools have access to the county's Career and Technical Education Center, which provides students with training in agriculture education, aviation technology and health science.

Riverside trails and a public golf course

One of the neighborhood's central green spaces is Rabanus Park, which features tennis and beach volleyball courts, as well as a community garden. Also nearby is the softball complex at Anderson Park. The Prairiewood Golf Course is a public, 9-hole, par-32 course. Lindenwood Park has walking trails along the Red River, along with access to a boat launch and campgrounds. "People can go hiking, biking, walking and skiing. They set up rinks in the winter for hockey," Mullaney says. "

MATBUS routes and interstates with easy regional access

The MATBUS provides public transportation throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area, making stops along 17th Avenue and 45th Street. This neighborhood has easy access to Interstates 94 and 29. Downtown Fargo is about 4 miles northeast, and Moorhead, Minnesota, is about 7 miles east, just across the Red River and the Minnesota state line. The nearest emergency room is at Sanford Medical Center, about 2 miles west. The Hector International Airport offers direct passenger flights to many U.S. cities, including Minneapolis and Chicago. However, it does not have direct international flights.
