A mixed-used suburb with amenities close by
Straddling the main thoroughfare of 13th Avenue, with Interstate 29 running along the western border, Westgate is one of the older suburbs of Fargo. “You can have a very comfortable lifestyle here without breaking the bank,” says Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a big town feel with the amenities, but with a small town heart.” The change over the years from an outlying exurb to one now surrounded by sprawling subdivisions has shaped the neighborhood – the northern portion of which consists of heavily trafficked streets lined with offices, commercial buildings and light industrial buildings. While those big-town amenities now surround the neighborhood, the free skating and pick-up hockey games under the lights in the outdoor ice rink in Westgate Park during the winters keep that small-town heartbeat going.

West Acres Mall, with over 100 national retailers and services and local art displays, is just to the west of the community – but Westgate has plenty to do within its borders. Neighborhood specialty stores cater to hobbies and thrift shopping, with places like Electric Underground for video games and DVDs, DTFM Vinyl Distro for record collectors, and Uptown Cheapskate for fashionistas on a budget. Housing from the 1970s
Ramblers and bi-levels from the 1970s sit on quarter-acre lots in a tree-lined subdivision in the southeastern corner, with a mixture of vinyl, stone and brick facades. The taller elms and maples offer shade and reflect the neighborhood’s maturity. Most feature two-stall garages with space in the driveway for more vehicles, and they sell for between $250,000 and $425,000. Condos and townhouses are clustered around the neighborhood; condos regularly sell for $100,000 to $200,000, while townhouses usually get $200,000 to $325,000. They generally include attached one- or two-car garages as well – Fargoans know how important it is to protect their cars in the chilling winters. There are also a number of apartment blocks that surround homes, with a third of the neighborhood being composed of rental apartments.

North High School and nearby colleges for higher education
Most students in Westgate will attend Lewis & Clark Elementary School, located east of the neighborhood, before moving along to Ben Franklin Middle School. Niche rated these schools as C-plus and B-plus, respectively. They’ll wrap their public secondary education up at North High School, which earns an A-minus and is rated as the top public high school in the Fargo Area by Niche, as well as the best high school for STEM in North Dakota. “We’ve got North Dakota State University which is big, we’ve got Concordia College, we’ve got Moorhead State University, there’s three colleges right there - and there’s a tech school,” says Bruce Johnson, Broker and Owner of RE/MAX Realty 1. All three schools are within five miles and under a 10-minute drive for those pursuing a degree or working at one of them.

Plenty of options, from MATBUS to walking
One of the more walkable suburbs of Fargo, Westgate has plenty of ways to get around. MATBUS routes 15, 16, 18 and 20 service the neighborhood, while a comprehensive network of sidewalks and quiet offshoot streets make biking and walking easy. Interstate 29 runs along the western side, connecting to Interstate 94 to the south and Main Avenue to the north. This puts Downtown Fargo, a 3-mile drive, within 10 minutes. Hector International Airport, 6 miles away, is also usually a drive of 10 minutes. Sanford Medical Center to the west and Essentia Health on 32nd Avenue – two of the largest employers in the region and 24-hour emergency care centers – are both roughly 3 miles away and can be reached by car in 10 minutes or less. For worship, the Islamic Society of Fargo-Moorhead is at the top end of the neighborhood.
Westgate Park is buzzing year round
“Every neighborhood has a park, they’re open year round,” says Heck. In the midst of the residential portion, Westgate Park features green space for running around and tossing a frisbee as well as soccer games. The recently upgraded playground entertains younger children, while all ages can enjoy the ice rink that is flooded in the winter – skating lights allow for evening free skating and pick-up hockey games, while the warming houses offer some respite from the cold between periods.
