A suburban Fargo neighborhood with a great outlook
Ice fishing and Microsoft might not seem like they go hand in hand, but in the southern Fargo suburb of Woodhaven, they’re just a part of everyday life. This community is a prime example of mixed-use growth, complete with properties for owning and renting, offices and industries, retail and parks. The presence of Microsoft within the neighborhood, as well as the nearby Sanford Medical Center, draws workers to the region. “We have quite a few people moving here for jobs. In our city – Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead and all the surrounding areas – we've been growing phenomenally. It's becoming a bigger and bigger city,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest. In Woodhaven, crisp lawns with tidy landscaping line the streets, and sidewalks provide walkways for kids to get to school. Nearby, tech workers stroll into the office, and on weekends families tote their fishing gear to one of the community's lakes to fish.

Waterfront vistas out the back windows
A selection of apartment and townhome rentals, tightly-packed twin homes, sprawling ramblers and stately bi-levels provide a range of housing opportunities for those looking to call Woodhaven home. There's uniformity in design across the contemporary styles – multiple peaked roofs that help to shield from snow and ice in the winters, durable vinyl siding with stone accents and insulated garages facing the roadway with concrete driveways angled towards the street. The garages themselves range from oversized two-stall to four-stall versions, offering storage for boats, winter toys, tools and more. Garages also tend to feature attic space and drains for melting snow. Townhouses are a popular low-maintenance option here, and many include garage spaces and HOA fees that include services like snow removal. Price points for townhouses range from $250,000 to $300,000. Twin homes, often featuring backyard privacy fencing to separate the two properties, generally sell for between $225,000 to $425,000 and are a popular entry point for families. Single-family homes can start at $300,000 and can sell for as much as $650,000, with waterfront/pond lots getting $50,000 to $100,000 more than equivalent homes without direct pond access.

A thorough network of sidewalks makes the Woodhaven neighborhood fairly walkable, while the quiet residential streets are also good for recreational biking. While Hector International Airport is 10 miles north and offers commercial flights across the country and into Canada. Community fisheries and parks provide much to do
The Woodhaven community features a pair of parks centered around two man-made lakes. Woodhaven North and Woodhaven South have small playgrounds, picnic tables, ADA fishing ramps and overlooks; Woodhaven North also has a small shelter. The community fisheries draw anglers from across the city. “Throughout the state we try to have some sort of urban ponds for kids. We try to focus on kids but they’re open to everybody – to have a place to go fish and to have fairly easy access,” says BJ Kratz, Supervisor of the Southeast Region of Fisheries with North Dakota Fish and Game. “We stock trout in late spring, usually around the first or second week of May, depending on availability…And we typically encourage catch and release.” Between the two lakes, and connected by a paved walking path, is Kennedy Park. Featuring six tennis courts, an outdoor skating rink (which becomes an ice hockey rink in the winter) and irrigated soccer fields, it’s a hub for summertime sports.

Winter events and more to pack the planner
“Parks and Rec holds an ice fishing tournament there on South Woodhaven,” says Kratz. “There are folks that icefish those two places as well,” he says, indicating both lakes. As long as the ice is good, the Youth Ice Fishing Derby takes place on South Woodhaven in February. It’s one of many wintertime events that get residents out of their homes. Frostival is another popular event to help ward off the North Dakota winter blues. Running over a span of nine days in late January and early February, Frostival features snow volleyball, kickball, snow yoga, disc golf and cardboard sled races, along with hot chocolate for all. North Woodhaven Pond hosts the summertime Trout Fest, where fishing experts from SCHEELS come out to meet with anglers under the age of 15 to teach, offer advice and encourage family participation in fishing.

A regional home office for a software giant
Originally the home of Great Plains Software, Microsoft took over the company and their Woodhaven campus in 2001. The campus alone brings over 1,500 jobs to the Fargo region, and workers looking to walk to work will often settle down in Woodhaven or one of the surrounding neighborhoods. This of course comes with the traffic of hundreds of employees driving in and out of the campus daily, but with nearby ramps on and off of Interstate 29, most commuter traffic doesn’t spill over into the residential portion of the neighborhood.
