Small-town feel blended with university presence, local shopping and vibrant culture

The bucolic town of Farmville, located about halfway between Richmond and Lynchburg, is steeped in history and culture. This community of 7,400 is known for its quaint downtown with local stores and restaurants and its rural energy. “Farmville is a great place for its small-town vibe,” says Ben Manis, a Realtor with Re/Max Advantage Plus and longtime Farmville resident. “You have all the convenience you could want without dealing with traffic you have elsewhere. Most people are moving out here to get away from the road noise and have some peace and quiet.”

While its rural setting fosters a laid-back lifestyle, Farmville boasts a robust culture, supported by recreational and historical attractions, educational establishments and lively community events. Historical landmarks highlight the town’s legacy, which spans from Civil War to Civil Rights, and recreational attractions showcase its natural beauty.
Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College are also woven into the town’s tapestry. “Farmville is a good-sized community; it’s small enough where you know everybody, but big enough that you can still meet new people and do new things all the time,” Manis says. “We’re experiencing steady growth, but we’re not busting at the seams, so it’s a pace people are comfortable with.”

Farmville has a small population of about 7,400, and is known for its historic storefronts and small town charm.

Single-family homes on larger lots offer more privacy

Manis says while most homes here are ranch, Craftsman and Farmhouse styles, there are some beautiful Victorian-style houses in the older section of town. Single-family options are most common, set close together in town and spread out on larger lots in rural areas. Prices vary. Most homes range between $200,000 and $450,000, but fixer-uppers can be found for as low as $60,000 and there are larger numbers with spacious acreage that can cost more than $1 million.

Historic recreational sites to miles of trails

Wilck’s Lake Park is centered around Wilck’s Lake, a narrow body of water surrounded by walking trails in the heart of Farmville. Farmville Lions Club Park features a playground popular among younger residents. The Appomattox River also flows through town, offering additional water recreation, such as kayaking.

For a different point of view, locals can walk, bike or horseback ride along the High Bridge Trail, a 32.2-mile trail that stretches from Pamplin in the west to Burkeville in the east. The trail’s crowning jewel is the High Bridge, a historic landmark dating back to the Civil War that sits 140 feet above the surrounding woodlands. Once an aqueduct that was turned into a railroad, the bridge is now a dedicated walkway part of the trail.

Lively downtown district and local dining

Locals gather for dining, shopping and celebrating in Farmville’s active downtown area. A quaint collection of eclectic local stores and vibrant eateries line Main Street, imbuing the district with energy and southern charm. “There are tons of little shops, and people love walking up and down the street because there isn’t a lot of traffic,” Manis says. “Main Street gets really busy, especially during spring and even summertime when the weather is nice, there will be lots of people out and about.”

Historic brick 19th-century storefronts showcase the many talents and services of the community, including pottery stores, boutiques and Amish Originals handcrafted wooden furniture. Restaurants also brim with personality, including favorites like Fishin’ Pig and Charley’s Waterfront Café. Longwood Village Shopping Center houses a Belk and Food Lion. Walmart Supercenter fulfills other necessities. Those who indulge enjoy Sandy River Distillery and Three Roads Brewing Company.

Cultural and musical events celebrate the community

Main Street is also a hub for local events, which range from cultural and historic to artistic and recreational. “There are a couple different events every year where they close down Main Street and it’s awesome,” Manis says. “Each event is always a great time for the community.”

Weekly farmers markets promote local merchandise and goods, from produce to candles, soaps and more. From May to September, residents gather at the High Bridge Plaza Caboose for live music, food trucks and vendors. The concert series caps off with Rock the Block in October. One of the town’s largest events is The Heart of Virginia Festival, an annual celebration of art, music, food and community. The weekend fest consists of 5K and 10K races on the High Bridge Trail and a robust lineup of local and regional musical artists.
