Ben Marzo grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, but he came to the more populous Williamsport area seeking business opportunities. Marzo runs The Food Guy Catering Company with his wife, Jess. When they moved, they settled in the Faxon neighborhood of Lycoming Township, next to the city of Williamsport. What Marzo found was a community in between a tiny town and a large city. An interstate runs through Faxon, which has craft breweries and big-box stores in less than 2 miles to the east and west. Still, there are traces of the charm of a small community. Tebbs Farms & Greenhouses has sold roadside produce in the neighborhood since the 1960s, while Hall’s Florist down the street has been owned by a resident for 25 years. Meanwhile, the Appalachians visible on the horizon are a reminder of the surrounding recreational opportunities. “There are tall mountains and great outdoor areas but still a little bit of a city feel,” Marzo says.
Faxon earns its name from the historic Faxon Company that used to operate in the area.
Faxon comes together at the center of the neighborhood with a small, circular pocket park.

People and dogs play at Faxon’s parks
Faxon Parkway and Lafayette Parkway converge in the middle of the neighborhood at Faxon Circle, a traffic loop around a grove of trees called Faxon Circle Park. Houses along the circle are a few steps from the pocket park’s benches. Houses on the east end border Bruce Henry Park. If parkgoers venture past the playground and pair of baseball fields, they can relax on flat rocks amid the trickling stream called Millers Run. The Lycoming College men’s and women’s tennis teams use the park’s six courts, also open to the public. To the north of Bruce Henry Park, small and big dogs can play off-leash in the two fenced sections of Loyalsock Dog Park. The West Branch flows directly south of Faxon, but Interstate 180 and a group of industrial buildings stand between the neighborhood and the river, restricting water access from the neighborhood. A path at Riverfront Park, 3 miles away, leads to the riverbank, and boaters can launch onto the water from Greevy Boat Ramp next to the path.
Faxon is an easily walkable and bikeable neighborhood thanks to the many trails.

Life north and south of Faxon Circle
Older home styles are common south of Faxon Circle, where many people live in American Foursquares and Dutch Colonials from the early 20th century. To the north, ranches and Colonial Revivals line the streets. Some of the largest homes surround Faxon Circle in the center. Homes are evenly spaced apart on modestly sized lots, and sidewalks traverse the entire neighborhood, with mature trees planted alongside them. Not every house has a driveway, but street parking is plentiful. Prices usually vary from the high $100,000s to the high $200,000s.

Easy access to the Golden Strip
Most businesses are on the south end, around Washington Boulevard. Residents may head over here when they need to get groceries from Weis Markets, watch a game at Rivals sports bar or hang out at Faxon Lanes bowling alley. There are also conveniences such as gas stations, banks and doctor's offices. Directly east of Faxon is the Golden Strip, a mile-long stretch of East Third Street lined with chain restaurants and retail chains, including Hobby Lobby and TJ Maxx. North of the Golden Strip, churches are concentrated near Northway Road. The design of Holy Cross Orthodox Church harkens back to Williamsport’s time as the nation’s logging capital during the 1800s. The church was built in the 1980s with logs from a 200-year-old barn. After the barn was dismantled, the timbers were transported 5 miles, and the pastor and parishioners used the lumber to construct the church. Worshipers also gather at St. Ann Catholic Church and Northway Community Church, a Free United Methodist congregation.

Home of the Little League World Series
Nearby South Williamsport hosts the Little League World Series, which brings hundreds of thousands of players, fans and media members to the region every August. Locals can attend the Grand Slam Parade downtown that kicks off the youth baseball tournament and the free games. However, the event brings crowds and traffic congestion to the area for about 10 days.
Within 200 miles of the Middle Atlantic’s biggest cities
Most of Faxon’s roads are low-speed residential streets suitable for walking and cycling, though many homes are a mile from the closest restaurant, store or park. People typically use cars to go beyond the neighborhood, with East Third Street routing to restaurants and breweries in downtown Williamsport and shopping in the Kenmar neighborhood. Interstate 180 runs through Faxon, providing a speedier way to drive throughout the Williamsport area. Faxon is within 200 miles of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York City, a reason Marzo and his wife made their home in the area. “We’re three hours from almost any major city, which gives us the opportunity to travel.” River Valley Transit Authority buses stop along Sheridan Street on their way to downtown and the Loyal Plaza shopping center on the Golden Strip.
