Beaver Dam offers a quiet escape from nearby Fayetteville
Beaver Dam is a rural corner of Cumberland County, full of two-lane roads bordered by fields, ranch-style homes and dense patches of trees. Lisa Blauser is a lifelong resident who says the rural area may not be booming with new people moving in, but the community welcomes anyone who decides to call Beaver Dam home. “Our community is very rural and rooted in farming,” Blauser says. “There are families who have lived here for generations on generations. I live next door to my brother, who lives next door to my parents. We have a sense of family and community here. I like to travel and explore, but I want to come home where I feel safe with people who care about me.” Home prices are more affordable than in central Fayetteville, and Beaver Dam is less than an hour from Fort Bragg, the largest military base in the world. While the area is mostly wide-open fields and country homes, residents are a short drive from shops and restaurants in Roseboro, Clinton, Dunn and Fayetteville. So when Fayetteville or other larger cities get too crowded, residents can move to Beaver Dam for more breathing room and a quieter atmosphere.
Large lots and no homeowner associations, regardless of price
Manufactured homes on large lots often sell for $230,000 or less, while larger ranch-style homes can range between $275,000 and $350,000. There are Craftsman homes built within the last 10 years that have sold for $600,000 to $875,000. Due to the rural setting, many homes run on septic tanks and well water systems, but residents don’t have to worry about homeowner associations. Because there are no subdivisions, homes have plenty of space between each other, so neighbors might have to drive down the road or walk across large yards to chat. Although homes are in the township of Beaver Dam, they may have Roseboro, Autryville or Fayetteville addresses.
Beaver Dam Elementary stands out in Cumberland County
Beaver Dam Elementary School earns an A-minus from Niche, which ranks it as the best elementary school in Cumberland County. The school has small class sizes, allowing students more one-on-one time with teachers. Blauser mentions the school puts on a Fall Festival every year, and the community gets involved where they can. The B-rated Mac Williams Middle feeds into Cape Fear High School, which gets a B-plus.
Driving less than an hour to Fayetteville, Fort Bragg and Roseboro
Commuters have a 20-mile drive to downtown Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Regional Airport. Roseboro is closer, about 16 miles north along Highway 24, while Clinton is closer to 30 miles north. Anyone heading to Fort Bragg has a roughly 30-mile drive using Turnbull Road. There are primary care doctors in nearby Roseboro, but the nearest hospital is Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in downtown Fayetteville. Beaver Dam has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Socializing in churches and exploring outdoor destinations nearby
“There are four or five churches, and they’re the social epicenters within the community,” Blauser says. “We’ve had tornadoes, hurricanes, and people get sick, so people fundraise and pray. People who move here and aren’t involved in church may not know as many people, but the church will come knocking; they won’t be annoying, though.” Residents who want a park to explore can drive to Roseboro and use the baseball fields or playground at Western District Park. Hunters drive south to Suggs Mill Pond Game Land, though they have to watch out for alligators around the lakes. The veteran-owned Cedar Creek Fish Farm, about 15 miles from home, offers a catch-and-pay system for anyone who wants to catch their own catfish or tilapia for dinner.
Heading out of town for restaurants and grocery stores
Blauser mentions most residents work in nearby areas like Clinton or Fayetteville, so driving to a restaurant isn’t a hassle for those accustomed to the drive. “There’s one restaurant under renovation called Railroad Street in Roseboro, and they have good home cooking,” Blauser says. “Hall’s Grill has a seafood special on Fridays. When you sit down for a meal, it’s going to take an hour because 10 people you know will come in and chat with you.” The Farmers Daughter of Beaver Dam recently opened, and Blauser highlights the farm has a food donation box and a free library anyone can take from. “Because we’re rural, you have to plan a trip to the grocery store,” Blauser says. “There’s a grocery store in Roseboro about 10 minutes from here. We have a kingdom of Dollar General stores, and some of them have gas stations or sell groceries.”
