Easy highway access makes South Fitchburg ideal for commuters
South Fitchburg offers easy access to some of the city’s most important places. Fitchburg State University, the largest employer, is about 2 miles north. Many homes are within walking distance of the Twin Cities Rail Trail, which connects Fitchburg and Leominster. State Route 2, along the community’s southern end, leads to Boston and merges with Interstate 190 to reach Worcester. This convenient location is what makes South Fitchburg stand out against other parts of the city. “It can take some people in north Fitchburg about 20 minutes to get to Route 2,” says Lana Kopsala, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. “South Fitchburg is the best place in the city for jumping on the highway and commuting somewhere else.”

Some homes are on compact lots with only street parking available, while others feature spacious driveways and larger lawns shaded by oak and pine trees. Though more than half of the residents are renters, they’re typically not Fitchburg State University students. “They live in the housing directly surrounding campus, not South Fitchburg,” Kopsala says. Fitchburg State University employs around 600 people and educates about 6,000 students, some of whom commute to school. “People from Worcester think of South Fitchburg as the entryway to Fitchburg State because they have to drive through the area to get on campus,” Kopsala says. The school offers over 40 degree programs, ranging from nursing to education. Red brick buildings dot the 60-acre campus, home to the Division III Falcons’ athletic facilities and an auditorium for student productions.

Boston is about 50 miles east, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Fitchburg Line carries passengers to the city in less than 2 hours. Stations are in downtown Fitchburg and North Leominster. A freight railyard is adjacent to the Fitchburg Municipal Airport on the community’s southeastern end.
