Ranch-style homes from the 1950s and ‘60s
“This is one of Flagstaff’s oldest communities, with homes built between the 1950s and ‘60s,” says Shafor. Most of these are ranch-style (some L-shaped) with up to four bedrooms, narrow driveways leading to one-car garages, and manicured front yards set on quarter-acre lots; prices range from $600,000 to $870,000. Mature pine and oak trees dot front yards, with the occasional hammock lofting between trunks, while wooden fences enclose backyards. Sidewalks line most residential streets here. “When the homes here were built, they had clay pipes connected to the sewer system, and tree roots can puncture those pipes. So, if you buy a house here, you may need to get the pipes looked at to see if there’s damage.”Regional chili competition
Thorpe Park, about 2 miles south, holds a regional Chili Festival every August. Locals set up their tents along the park’s concrete walkways and stew pots of red, green and salsa chili for the public to taste. The first day is the First Responder Chili Challenge, while day two has the Best Restaurant Chili in Flagstaff competition; winners are announced at the end of each day. All proceeds benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Flagstaff.Specialty pizzas, espresso drinks and nearby grocers
Within the neighborhood, family-owned Fratelli Pizza has been a local favorite since 2002, serving specialty pies like buffalo chicken, along with calzones and frosty brews; a few blocks south, The Station Cafe and Lounge specializes in espresso drinks and breakfast sandwiches. Grocery options are found within two miles south, including a Safeway and Bashas’, a family-owned grocer in the Fort Valley Shopping Center. Craft beer drinkers can hit the Flagstaff Brewery Trail downtown to visit eight different breweries, and six miles east, the Flagstaff Mall has a food court, outdoor fireplace and department stores like JCPenney and Dillard’s.Yoga in the park, a private pool and an observatory
Shafor has fond childhood memories of the neighborhood's 1-acre Jim Cullen Memorial Park, where he'd go swimming in the summer-seasonal pool; the park also has open, grassy space for kids to run around and adults to participate in group yoga sessions. A stretch of the 56-mile Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS) runs beside the neighborhood's Fort Valley Road, popular with hikers and bikers. The Lowell Observatory sits about 3 miles southwest; local school groups come here to look through the powerful telescopes, and during summer camps, kids can build rockets or recreate the solar system. The Arizona Snowbowl ski resort sits on the western slope of Mount Humphreys (the tallest point of the San Francisco Peaks) 12 miles away, and offers summer and winter activities.Travel by wheels, rails or on foot
Interstate 17 is found 4 miles south, while Interstate 40 sits roughly 5 miles southwest. Historic Route 66 is 2 miles south. Major neighborhood thoroughfares include Navajo Drive and Fort Valley Road, the latter leading 2 miles south to downtown Flagstaff. Mountain Line Public Transit buses make stops throughout the neighborhood, while Amtrak trains depart from the Visitors Center station downtown. Most residential streets are lined with sidewalks, and the paved, multi-use Flagstaff Urban Trail runs parallel to Fort Valley Road and leads downtown. Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 1 mile south, while the city’s airport, Flagstaff Pulliam, is about 7 miles south.AP Academy at Flagstaff Unified district schools
Students may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Sechrist Elementary, which earns an overall B-plus from Niche, then continue to B-minus-rated Mount Elden Middle. At Flagstaff High, which Niche gives a B, students can join the AP Academy to take challenging college-level courses; the academy also offers opportunities to practice public speaking.
