Golfing destination near the base of the San Francisco Peaks
Access to golf courses draws buyers to Country Club Estates, set 5 miles from downtown Flagstaff within North America’s largest ponderosa pine forest, near the base of the San Francisco Peaks. “People who want to play golf but don’t want to pay high membership fees move here,” says Jason Shafor, sales agent and manager of RE/MAX Fine Properties, who grew up in the area. “It’s also a quiet destination for second-home buyers, which make up about half of the population here; the other half are either retirees or local business owners.” Custom-built homes sit by the Continental Country Club, which includes a public 18-hole golf course, recreation center and restaurant, or by the private Aspen Valley Golf Club. Shops and restaurants are found about 3 miles west on the other side of I-40.

Technology institute at Flagstaff Unified district schools
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Knoles Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, and Sinagua Middle, which earns a B-minus. At the B-minus-rated Coconino High, which Niche gives a B-minus, students interested in science and technology careers can join the Coconino Institute of Technology, where they’ll get to build rockets or cardboard boats, and must complete a capstone project before graduation.
Coconino High School is a well known school in the area.
Local Country Club Estates students often attend Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff.

Public and private golf courses, a gaming rec center and canyon trails
At the Continental Country Club in the neighborhood’s northern end, residents don't need to be members to play through the 18-hole public course. Those who do choose to join the family-oriented club, though, can also use the swimming pools and gym, play pickleball or tennis, or hang out at the Bear Paw Recreation Center across the street, which offers billiards and gaming consoles. One mile southwest, a membership is required to play on the Aspen Valley Golf Club's private 18-hole course, which is lined with ponderosa pines. Walnut Canyon National Monument, set roughly 6 miles outside the neighborhood, has mile-long rocky and paved trails that weave through forests of juniper and pinion pine; overlooks here reveal centuries-old cliff dwellings, once the ancestral homelands of Indigenous Peoples.

Fun at the country club
Weekly activities are held at the Continental Country Club. “There’s so many things to do here,” says Lori Anna Harrison, real estate agent for My Home Group, who was born and raised in Flagstaff, “like bridge on Thursday nights, painting classes and even knitting classes, which I’ve actually taught.” Private events and weddings can be booked here, too.

Pasta and cocktails at the country club
“The only restaurant locals really go to for lunch or dinner is Oakmont at the Continental Country Club,” says Shafor. Here, diners can order pasta dishes or sandwiches and craft cocktails; an outdoor patio offers views of Mount Elden. Other restaurants sit outside of the neighborhood on the opposite side of I-40, like Wildflower Bread Company, which serves chicken salad and club sandwiches with chips or pasta salad. Shops are found outside of the neighborhood as well; the Flagstaff Mall is 3 miles north with department stores like JCPenney and Marshalls, while grocery stores like Fry’s and Whole Foods are within a few miles west, along with a Walmart and Sam's Club.

Custom builds and mountain-modern homes in the pines
The two most common home styles here are custom-built split-levels and what’s locally referred to as "mountain-modern" properties, the latter blending with the environment because of darker, earth-toned wood siding, while the former has much lighter siding colors. Built between the 1970s and ‘90s on up to 1-acre lots, both styles feature wrap-around porches, stone-edged flower beds and two-car garages; some are set close enough to the Continental and Aspen Golf Courses to hear the thwack of golf balls behind the pines. Smaller versions of these homes with up to four bedrooms tend to range from $600,000 to $850,000, while those with five bedrooms, newly renovated kitchens and private spas, often set at higher elevations for better mountain views, range from $900,000 to $1.3 million. The homeowners association here doesn't allow fences, which Shafor says may be a deal breaker for those with pets.

Nearby interstates and wide streets for golf carts and walking
Interstate 40 sits roughly 2 miles west, leading 197 miles west to California and about 170 miles east to New Mexico. Historic Route 66 is 6 miles northeast, and Interstate 17 is 5 miles southwest, leading 147 miles south to Phoenix. North Country Club and North Continental Drives are the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares, and East Butler Avenue leads about 5 miles west to downtown Flagstaff. “Even though there’re no sidewalks here, residents still walk along the streets because they’re much wider than in neighboring areas.” says Shafor. "It’s also pretty common for locals to drive their golf carts here.” Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 6 miles northwest, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is 10 miles southwest.
