Residential community within walking distance of downtown
There are sleepy suburbs and there are secluded suburbs, Flagstaff Townsite, at the base of the San Francisco Peaks in North America’s largest ponderosa pine forest, is on the far other end of the spectrum. “Flagstaff Townsite's probably the most active area in town because it’s so close to everything,” says Cody Bauer, Realtor for the Foundation Group at Best Flagstaff Homes Realty, who lives in the area. “Sidewalks connect homes to event spaces and parks, and sometimes locals will just walk along neighborhood streets to look at the older homes.”

Older restored homes along sidewalk-lined streets
“Flagstaff Townsite has a mix of older homes, from the late 1800s to the early 1900s,” says Bauer. He adds that many of these homes have been restored through city grant money, with updated electrical, fresh coats of paint and new porches. Most are two-bedroom A-frame bungalows with stone foundations, roof-shaded front porches and either a detached one-car garage or a short driveway; prices range from $430,000 to $550,000. Three-bedroom Craftsman-style homes with front-gabled roofs, front walkways, and small yards enclosed by picket fences range from $600,000 to $850,000, depending on square footage and lot size. The streets here are lined with sidewalks and mature trees, and neighbors can be seen walking their dogs or jogging.

Downtown shops and restaurants within walking distance
Downtown restaurants and shops are within walking distance of the neighborhood, including locally owned Fat Olives Wood Fired Pizzeria and Italian Kitchen, with its ovens flown in directly from the Old Country. Bauer says it is the best pizza he’s ever had and the Food Network lists it as a “Top Places to Eat.” Fat Olives specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizza, and diners can also indulge in a bacon-based pie affectionately named, “Ms. Piggy.” Trendy gift shops sit side-by-side with locally owned jewelers, and bakeries are found next door to wine bars. Natural Grocers and a Safeway are about a mile south, and roughly 6 miles northeast, the Flagstaff Mall offers department stores like Dillard’s.

City Hall hosts the Community Farmers Market from May through October, as well as the annual Flagstaff Urban Flea Market from June through October, with everything from vintage clothing to records, leatherwork and comics. Set within downtown's sprawling Thrope Park, the Joe C. Montoya Community and Senior Center offers free tai chi classes, evenings of bridge and chair yoga sessions; memberships are only required for use of the center’s weight room.

Fishing pond with trails, organized sports and an observatory
“There’s a fishing pond that nobody really knows about here near Aztec Street,” says Bauer. “It won’t show up on a map, but the town keeps it stocked, and there’s also public trails that run alongside of it.” On the neighborhood’s eastern border, the roughly 3-acre Wheeler Park has open space for organized sports or strolls with pets, while kids can sled and climb on playground equipment at Thorpe Park, a short walk west. The Lowell Observatory, about a mile west, has powerful telescopes for stargazers, and hosts summer camps where kids can learn about the solar system or build rockets.
