Secluded, small-town living with a tight-knit community
Mormon Lake is a rustic residential community about 30 miles southeast of Flagstaff known for its seclusion within the Coconino National Forest. “People here want to be in the woods—they’re not as interested in Flagstaff amenities as they are being outside,” says Eileen Taggart, a Realtor with Re/Max Fine Properties and over 17 years of local experience. Amenities are limited here, but residents can pick up groceries from the general store, dine at the steakhouse and grab a drink at the local saloon. “It’s got its own cowboy downtown area,” Taggart says. Utilities are also limited, and residents either have water delivered or use well water. Many residents here are second homeowners, but there is also a small, tight-knit community of year-round residents. Jason Shafor, a Flagstaff local and a Realtor with Exp Realty, says, "Everyone knows each other who lives out there."
Tourism is an important industry here, and some homeowners rent their houses to local tourists; visitors also stay at the Mormon Lake Lodge or park their RVs at the Mormon Lake Trailer Park. Mormon Lake itself, an intermittent lake, is about 5 miles north of the community’s center. “It’s a very isolated and secluded neighborhood that’s about escaping the hustle and bustle,” Shafor says. “It’s for people wanting to get out into the pine trees and recreation and don’t need to be close to amenities.”
Cabins in the woods
“There are some beautiful homes out there,” Shafor says. “The majority are second homes with a very mountain/forest-escape feel—log cabin, retreat-style mountain homes. For the most part, you’re going to find pretty good-sized lots, but there’s also some smaller lots tucked back into the woods.” Many local homes are set along dirt roads surrounded by ponderosa pine trees with deep forest and distant mountain views. Homes here are typically set on lots that range from 5,000 square feet to an acre; one-bedroom midcentury cabins range from $100,000 to $200,000, and rustic, late 20th-century Craftsman-style homes with up to three bedrooms range from $250,000 to $600,000. There are also a handful of four-to-five-bedroom custom-built homes from the late 20th-century set on multi-acre lots, with features like outdoor fire pits and gated entrances; prices range from $1 million to $2 million. “There’s not a lot of utilities there," Shafor says. "There’s power, but a lot of people are on seasonal wells." Taggart says some residents have private year-round wells, while others have water, and possibly propane, delivered to their homes.

Tree-lined views of the Coconino National Forest
“The entire area is a recreation area,” Taggart says. Five miles north of the community’s center, Mormon Lake is an intermittent lake, which means the lake is dry during droughts; it’s also the largest natural lake in Arizona, and fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines here for catfish, trout and pike when the lake’s stocked. “Don’t plan on going there and launching a boat or anything,” Shafor says. “You can kayak sometimes, but it’s very marshy.” The neighborhood also offers several dirt-packed trails that lead through tree-shaded views of the Coconino National Forest, like the 2-mile Mormon Lakeview Trail that starts in the Double Springs Campground. Shafor and Taggart also say off-road ATV driving is popular here. Thirty-eight miles north, residents can drive to the Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve to see native vegetation, over 100 bird species and striking rock formations with Northern Sinagua cave paintings.

Community events support the local fire district
The Mormon Lake Fire District and the nonprofit Mormon Lake Charities host neighborhood events like the annual Community Safety and Fun Day in June, where residents learn about first aid and emergency preparedness, meet local firefighters and get up close with the district’s firetruck and helicopter. There’s also a Fourth of July parade and the annual Craft Fair and Auction Fundraiser in August, where local vendors sell their wares to support the district. Residents also enjoy smaller events at the fire district station throughout the year, like bingo and casino nights.
Driving into Flagstaff
Residential streets here don’t have sidewalks and there isn’t public transportation, so residents drive to get around. Mormon Lake and Lake Mary Roads are the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares; the former merges with Interstate 17, and the latter merges with Interstate 40. Both interstates lead 30 miles northwest toward Flagstaff, which is a 35- to 45-minute drive, depending on traffic. Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is 30 miles northwest, and Flagstaff Medical Center is 31 miles northwest.
American comfort food at the Mormon Lake Steakhouse
“There’s one general store and gas station, and that’s all you got,” Shafor says. For groceries and other essentials, residents shop at the Mormon Lake Country Store. Mormon Lake Pizzeria is the neighborhood’s go-to for a personal pie or wings, and across the street, Mormon Lake Steakhouse is touted as one of Arizona’s few open-pit steakhouses. After a hike through the pines, residents can enjoy brunch or dinner service at the steakhouse and dine on American comfort food like surf and turf, truffle fries and tomahawk steak with chimichurri and seasonal vegetables. For a night out, The Saloon is an 1800s-themed bar serving beer on tap and old-fashioned cocktails in a rustic setting with live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
