Secluded single-family homes in the woods
Homes here typically range between $300,000 and $600,000 and aren't governed by homeowner’s associations. “The price point is good for first-time homebuyers and for second-time homebuyers,” Shafor says. Single-family homes with dirt-and-gravel-packed driveways dot rustic tree-lined streets; homes here are mostly single-story ranch-style from the late 20th-century or Craftsman-inspired homes built after 2000. “There are some homes that were bought and bulldozed to build newer homes, and you’ll still see older homes too,” Shafor says. “It’s a hodgepodge of different things.” One-tenth-acre lots are common, and Shafor says lot sizes here tend to be smaller than in Kachina Village. A two-bedroom ranch-style home can start at $350,000, while a split-level Craftsman-style home can cost $550,000.Exploring parks and green spaces in Coconino Natural Forest
At Kachina Wetlands Preserve, 3 miles west, residents can keep watch for hundreds of bird species while exploring dirt-packed trails like the 2-mile Kachina Wetlands Loop. A mile south at the 12-acre Raymond County Park, locals can enjoy grassy fields under the Arizona sun, shoot hoops on the basketball court or aim for a home run on the baseball diamond. About 20 miles east, fishing enthusiasts head to Upper Lake Mary to cast their lines for black crappie, channel catfish and northern pike; residents can also launch their jet boats and kayaks here.Dual-enrollment opportunities at Flagstaff High
Local kids can start school at Lura Kinsey Elementary, rated C-plus, before moving on to B-minus-rated Mount Elden Middle, where students can take classes in STEM-related subjects like coding and computer tech. At the B-rated Flagstaff High, students can take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Coconino Community College.Community gatherings throughout the year
Mountainaire Tavern hosts seasonal get-togethers, like Halloween Happy Hour, and community events like tournaments, fundraisers and live music performances. In June, the annual Village Land Shoppe Kachina Village & Mountainaire Community Yard Sale is a day when residents can put on their own yard sales, and Village Land Shoppe, a local real estate agency, creates a master list of the yard sales for residents to check out. In the summer, residents can attend the Concerts in the Park series, which features food trucks and local musicians at Coconino County parks like Raymond County Park, found about 2 miles west.Getting around from Mountainaire
Interstate 17 runs along Mountainaire’s western border, leading about 10 miles north toward Flagstaff, an 8- to 10-minute drive depending on traffic. There isn’t public transportation in Mountainaire, but residents can use Mountain Line buses in Flagstaff and rideshare services to get around. Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is about 6 miles north, and Flagstaff Medical Center is 11 miles north.Rustic shopping and dining
“There’s a little store and tavern and that’s all you have in Mountainaire,” Shafor says. For basic groceries and snacks, residents can stop into the Mountainaire Country Store. Next door, the Mountainaire Tavern offers craft beer and comfort food, like pizza and BBQ pork ribs; the tavern also hosts live music and neighborhood gatherings throughout the year, like cornhole tournaments and community fundraisers. “A lot of locals enjoy the tavern, and even people from Flagstaff do Harley rides out there to grab a pizza and a beer,” Shafor says. For more dining options and traditional grocery stores, residents head into Flagstaff, about 8 miles north. Depending on traffic, “You can get to the Bashas’ grocery store in about 10 minutes,” Shafor says.Risk of wildfires
Mountainaire is at risk for wildfires, and homebuyers here should research insurance and safety guidance for their home. The last wildfires in the area were the Luke and Scott Fires in 2023, about 10 miles south, which were fenced off and contained before spreading to Mounainaire. Highlands Fire District Station 23 is located near Interstate 17, and residents can sign up for the Coconino County Emergency Notification System to receive real-time alerts for local emergencies.
