Pine Knoll-Brannen Homes
Ranch-style homes from the ‘50s and newer townhouses
The neighborhood was built in two phases, from west to east. To the west, ranch-style homes from the 1950s line narrow, tree-lined streets, and to the east, split-level townhouses from the early- to mid-2000s are found along cul-de-sacs. All homes here tend to have wood siding, shaded front porches with wood or stone accents, and either gravel or paved driveways. Front yards are large enough for a row of hedges and a few mature pine trees, and backyard patios are enclosed with metal or wooden shadowbox fences. About half of the neighborhood’s streets are lined with sidewalks. “You’ll definitely see locals out walking their dogs or riding their bikes here,” says Piet, “and sometimes they’ll invite neighbors over for dinner parties.” Home sizes range from 1,200 to 3,000 square feet, on lots of 2,600 to 4,600 square feet, and prices range from $423,000 to $750,000.Native American Club at Flagstaff High
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Lura Kinsey Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche, and Mount Elden Middle, which earns a B-minus. At the B-rated Flagstaff High, students can join the Native American Club, which hosts the school’s annual powwow, featuring over 250 dancers and drummers from different tribes; club members can attend the United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) organization’s annual conference in Washington D.C. The local charter school option, A-plus-rated Haven Montessori, serves kindergarten through Grade 6. Northern Arizona University, established in 1899, is about a mile southwest; over 130 online programs are offered here, and almost half of the university's enrollment includes first-generation students.Nearby interstates, bus stops and bike routes
Interstate 40 sits roughly 2 miles south, while Interstate 17 is found about 2 miles southwest; Historic Route 66 is 1 mile north. South Paseo Del Flag and South Lone Tree Road are the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares; the latter leads 2 miles north to downtown Flagstaff. Mountain Line Public Transit buses make stops throughout the neighborhood, and Amtrak trains depart from the Visitors Center station downtown. Designated bike routes parallel East Pine Knoll Drive, while a gravel- and dirt-packed path – part of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System – runs across the northern end. Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 3 miles north, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is roughly 6 miles south.Garden art, educational classes and urban trails
Within the neighborhood, the 8-acre Arroyo Park has a playground and a baseball field, while north of the park, the Boys and Girls Club of Flagstaff offers after-school tutoring and leadership programs for kids and teens. The neighborhood's northern border is lined with gravel- and dirt-packed trails that belong to the Flagstaff Urban Trails System, popular with hikers and mountain bikers. Just north, 2-acre Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta County Park’s public gardens are full of community art, earning park the 2023 Award of Distinction for Art in Public Places; one work features panels of abstract paintings that represent the area's diverse cultures. A storybook trail winds through the gardens, featuring pages of a children's book tacked to pedestals; audio versions are available in English, Spanish and Navajo. At the park's Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, local students can learn about local ecosystems and geology.Nearby Mediterranean and Mexican eateries
Set a mile north of the neighborhood, Someburros serves Sonoran-style Mexican fare like deep-fried burritos, as well as traditional tacos and margaritas. Across the street, Dutch Bros Coffee specializes in cold brews, lattes and energy drinks. At the Green Tree Mini Mall 2 miles west, the fast-casual My Pita Wrap Mediterranean Grill serves lamb-beef gyros with tzatziki, and falafel with hummus; they also carry a selection of Mediterranean products like spices, olive oil and pickles. Local grocery stores include Whole Foods Market a mile north, and Sprouts Farmers Market 2 miles west; big-box stores like Target and Walmart are also nearby. The Flagstaff Mall is about 6 miles northeast, with department stores like JCPenney and Marshalls.Family-friendly science programs
On the first Saturday of each month, the Willow Bend Environmental and Education Center hosts "Science Saturday," a series of science-themed programs taught either by staff, or the occasional guest scientist or artist. Kids might dress up as their favorite animal and make their own animal mask, or watch demonstrations about scientific observation. These events are free, open to the public, and don't require reservations.
