Flagstaff suburb with single-family homes at the base of Mount Elden

Smokerise Valley is an established, residential suburb about 6 miles northeast of Downtown Flagstaff, near the base of Mount Elden and anchored by a pocket park, trail systems and Highway 89. “What’s unique about this neighborhood is its moderately priced homes compared to other local communities,” says Rick Lopez, a Flagstaff native and Realtor with RE/MAX Fine Properties. “Plus, you have single-level houses with two-car garages here, which is hard to find.” Most of the families here have school-age children, and many residents work downtown as civil servants. Folks here can bike to nearby shops and restaurants, but drive or take or public transportation to travel outside of the area.

Older ranch-style homes without an HOA

Smokerise Valley’s 1970s and early ‘80s ranch-style homes sit close together along narrow, sidewalk-lined streets. These three-to-four-bedroom houses typically feature winged roofs, shaded front doors and two-car garages; front yards are planted with stone-edged flower beds and mature elm and pine trees, and enclosed with chain-link fences. Home sizes range from about 1,300 to 2,000 square feet. Depending on the size, prices typically range from $450,000 to $650,000, compared to nearby neighborhoods with homes ranging from $780,000 to $1.3 million. “This is a great investment neighborhood, especially for long-term rentals,” says Lopez, “and there’s no homeowners association here.”

Convenient highway and bike route access

Interstate 40 and Historic Route 66 sit roughly 2 miles southwest, while Interstate 17 is found about 8 miles southwest. The neighborhood is bordered west by Highway 89, a major local thoroughfare that leads about 6 miles southwest to Downtown Flagstaff. Lopez says that despite Smokerise Valley's proximity to Highway 89, traffic noise isn't a big issue; the speed limits here within city limits are significantly lower than those in outlying areas, and the neighborhood's residential streets sit far enough off the highway that traffic noise becomes muffled. Commuters here can drive to work, take Mountain Line Public Transit buses, or take Amtrak from the Visitors Center station downtown. Designated bike routes parallel the neighborhood's main streets, and a paved portion of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System borders 89. Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 6 miles southwest, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is roughly 11 miles southwest.

Playground near Mount Elden and popular loop trails

Set in the neighborhood’s northern end, near Mount Elden, the roughly 1-acre Smokerise Park features a half-basketball court, a kids’ playground and a walking path. Cyclists and hikers can travel right from the neighborhood to the Coconino National Forest's popular Fatman’s Loop Trail, which begins along 89; this roughly 2-mile dirt- and gravel-packed trail hugs the base of Mount Elden, featuring oval-shaped boulders and cave-like nooks and crannies, and is mostly flat except for a few steep sections that offer views of the city and surrounding countryside. About 3 miles southeast of the neighborhood, Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve has other well-known trails like the Tom Moody Loop, a 3-mile trail surrounding the entire preserve.

Steak-focused cafe, Chinese fare and nearby shops

Shops and restaurants sit within a mile north of the neighborhood, and roughly 2 miles southwest along Highway 89. Safeway is the nearest grocer about a mile southwest. Local favorite Mary’s Cafe serves sirloin steak and potatoes for dinner, while the fast-casual Flaming Wok dishes out authentic Chinese fare. Savers, a chain thrift store, shares a lot with fast-food joints, and residents can also find locally owned coffee shops, hardware stores and specialty boutiques. Lopez says locals can bike to the Flagstaff Mall a mile away, which has department stores like Dillard’s and JCPenney, and big-box retailers, including The Home Depot and World Market are a few miles south.

A Halloween hot spot

“Halloween is a major event in Smokerise Valley,” says Lopez. “Families go all out with their decorations and invitations, so much so that locals from nearby neighborhoods bring their kids to trick-or-treat here.” Downtown hosts an adult Halloween Pub Crawl, with costume contests, social media games and special food and drink options at every stop.
