Flagstaff suburb farther from the city center
Set about 7 miles east of Downtown Flagstaff, Walnut Meadows is a residential suburb of ranch-style homes from the mid-1990s edged by a popular trail system and a public 18-hole golf course. “Suburban Walnut Meadows is a great option for anyone looking for newer, median-priced homes away from the city center and close to outdoor activities,” says Cody Bauer, Realtor for the Foundation Group at Best Flagstaff Homes Realty, who lives in the area. More full-time residents live here compared to other Flagstaff neighborhoods, with fewer short-term rentals, and families with kids utilize wide, sidewalk-lined streets for play. Shops and restaurants sit outside of Walnut Meadows, so locals rely on cars to get around. Since the neighborhood doesn’t border interstates, there’s less traffic noise.

Ranch-style homes with manicured yards
Walnut Meadows’ 1990s ranch-style homes are set along wide streets lined with sidewalks, pine and oak trees, and glimpses of the mountains. Separated by fences, these three-to-five-bedroom houses share common features like cross-gabled roofs, two-car garages, and curving front walkways of concrete or stone; front yards are planted with low-water gardens or manicured lawns. Home sizes range from about 1,600 to about 3,000 square feet, on lots of a bit more than one-tenth up to nearly half an acre, and prices range from $650,000 to $850,000. Centrally, newly constructed custom-built homes on lots up to a third of an acre offer three-car garages, bonus rooms and stone patios, ranging from $1 million to $1.3 million. Kids here often play basketball in the streets, and neighbors go all out with their Christmas light displays. Locals have to join the neighborhood’s homeowners association, which charges $647 annually for access to their pool, fitness and recreation centers and tennis and pickleball courts.
Other Walnut Meadow homes have manicured lawns along walkways of concrete or stone.

Film, TV and graphics classes at Coconino High School
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Knoles Elementary, which earns a B-grade from Niche, and Mount Elden Middle, which earns a B-minus. At the B-minus-rated Coconino High, students can dually enroll in film, TV and graphics classes for college credits through the school’s Career and Technical Education program.
Interstates and bus stops outside of the neighborhood
Interstate 40 sits 2 miles north and Interstate 17 is roughly 8 miles southwest; Historic Route 66 is 3 miles north. East Abineau Canyon Drive and North Walnut Hills Drive are the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares; North Walnut Hills Drive leads roughly 7 miles west to Downtown Flagstaff. Most residents here use their cars to run errands, as the nearest Mountain Line Public Transit bus stop is about 2 miles north of the neighborhood; Amtrak trains depart from the Visitors Center station downtown. Only one bike route is accessible along North Walnut Hills Drive, and the Campbell Mesa Loop Trails – part of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System – sit a mile east. Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 7 miles west, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is roughly 11 miles southwest.
Local multi-use trails and a public golf course
The Campbell Mesa Trail System skirts the neighborhood’s eastern edge, where hikers and cyclists can trek roughly 15 miles of flat, interconnected dirt-packed trails through forested glades and wildflower-filled meadows; these trails become popular with snowshoers during the winter. Mount Elden looms nearby, and various wildlife can be seen here year-round. A paved walking path encircling man-made Walnut Canyon Lake is a quick jaunt west of the trails, where on a clear day, reflections of area pines ripple on the lake’s surface. A mile west, the Continental Golf Club features a public 18-hole course; a membership is required to access the club’s pool, pickleball and tennis courts, as well as the Bear Paw Recreation Center across the street, which has an outdoor jacuzzi and computer stations.

Set about a mile northwest of the neighborhood, The Oakmont is part of the Continental Country Club and open to the public, serving classic fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Another dining option is The Toasted Owl East Side, a popular brunch spot about 2 miles north, serving breakfast tacos with all the fixings and made-from-scratch buttermilk pancakes. Downtown’s Old Town Shops – a strip of locally owned businesses – feature boutiques and jewelers, while grocery options like Safeway are 3 miles north and Fry’s are 6 miles west. Big-box stores, including Walmart and Target, are also nearby, and the Flagstaff Mall includes department stores such as JCPenney.
Celtic festival at Flagstaff's Fort Tuthill County Park
While there aren’t neighborhood events, residents can head to Fort Tuthill County Park, roughly 11 miles southwest, to celebrate the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival every July. This two-day event honors Scottish and Irish heritage with regional dances, baking workshops and wheat weaving where locals can learn how to make a Celtic knot or cross, as well as instrument demonstrations of the bodhran (drum) and bagpipes. Whiskey, scotch and gin tastings are held here, as well as lectures about Celtic history; kids can have fun playing tug-of-war and other games.
Threatening rain, fires and large amounts of snow
Walnut Canyon faces the risk of flooding from monsoon rains, which are more threatening after a wildfire, as forests here help prevent water from flowing into residential areas. Nothing can be built on a flood plain that sits near Walnut Canyon Lake, and flood insurance is required if homeowners here live in designated flood zones. The neighborhood’s homeowners association requires every resident to remove fire fuels, such as pine needles, dead leaves and trash, within a 30-foot perimeter around their home to help prevent wildfires from spreading. Every winter, snowstorms can dump a collective 152 inches of snow here, and city snowplows prioritize main thoroughfares, major hills, downtown areas and local bus routes over residential streets.
