Locals walking or driving along Telegraph Avenue, the main thoroughfare of Flat Rock, will be greeted by a line of small businesses, ranging from boutique stores to local restaurants. “I work specifically on making it easy for small businesses to locate in Flat Rock. We had many new businesses open during COVID-19, unlike surrounding areas. Most of our businesses here are small businesses,” says Liz Hendley, economic development director and Downtown Development Authority director for the City of Flat Rock. These businesses make Downtown Flat Rock a focus of lifestyle for the city itself, from the historic buildings to Huroc Park, the city’s primary spot for events and summer activity.

Premium on small businesses, local restaurants near river
Flat Rock residents who live downtown have the advantage of enjoying local restaurants nestled along the Huron River. “We are home to the popular Atwater Street Tacos, Michael’s on the River, and Kate’s Kitchen, to name just a few,” says Hendley. Atwater Street Tacos offers authentic Mexican flavors on a patio overlooking Huroc Park. Hendley points out specialty retail shops as a major part of downtown business, like Krzyske Brothers Flat Rock Hardware and 24Luxe Beauty Bar, a local beauty salon. A smaller version of Meijer is located a mile north on Vreeland Road for groceries.

Instant access to Huroc Park
Huroc Park, situated on an island near downtown, can be accessed along West Huron River Drive. “Our park is on the Huron River and, over the years, has become a very popular fishing spot, as well as a peaceful place to picnic,” says Hendley. “The entrance to Huroc Park also features connections to the Downriver Linked Greenways and the Iron Belle Trail, which runs throughout Michigan.” A gazebo is available, while a mile-long paved walking/bike path offers a leisurely circuit around the park.
