Settling down in a close-knit, conveniently located community
Located near Kettering University and McLaren Regional Medical Center, Mott Park was developed in the early 1920s to house professionals, including teachers, doctors and nurses. Over the years, it has maintained its classic architecture and strong community spirit, living by the motto “neighbors building a stronger community.”
While it’s relatively larger than surrounding neighborhoods such as Glen Haven and Ballenger Square, there’s a different level of community engagement and commitment. “It stretches over a pretty big range, I’d say maybe five square miles, but it’s very tight-knit,” says Brent Diggs, a Realtor with Century 21 Signature Realty and Mott Park resident. “I mean, I take daily walks throughout the neighborhood, and everybody’s waving. The people here are great.”
It’s home to a mix of families, empty nesters and singles, with the neighborhood’s historic, mid-sized homes making it especially appealing to those with children. There’s ample recreation within walking distance to keep kids involved, which Diggs notes is a plus for many. He also says that while he has lived in the community for five years, many of his neighbors have been around for much longer—some even close to 60 years. “It’s a place to settle down and stay,” Diggs says. “It's a family-oriented neighborhood. Of course, there are single people living in homes as well, but it's a very family-oriented neighborhood.”

A coalition of involved residents
Mott Park doesn’t have an HOA, but it does have a prominent neighborhood association. Board members maintain the neighborhood's cleanliness and beautification, ensure cohesion among residents, host various events throughout the year and act as liaisons between residents and government officials. They secured a partnership with Crim Fitness Foundation, which helps fund many neighborhood events.
The neighborhood association isn’t solely responsible for the upkeep of the community, as many residents take matters into their own hands. Neat Street is a program in which anyone can adopt a street and commit to keeping it as trash-free as possible. For many, that means walking the street every other week and picking up litter. The coalition handles larger issues, including downed trees, illegal dumping and overgrown yards at vacant houses. Kettering University students often join the clean-up crews to maintain the area. “They come out and clean probably every week,” Briggs says. “They keep it clean around here. They definitely take pride in it being a historic neighborhood, and I'm glad people actually care to keep it up.”
Other initiatives to maintain curb appeal include a partnership with Adopt-a-Park, which is run through Keep Genesee County Beautiful. Through this partnership, the namesake Mott Park, which sits at the center of the neighborhood, has received a slew of upgrades—from new benches to foliage cleanup. There’s also an involved neighborhood watch group. Says Briggs, “You don’t really hear too much going on around here, but if anything is going on, we have the Facebook page, and people communicate on that all day.”

Over 70 acres of recreation
The namesake Mott Park is a community staple. With a playground, hockey area, soccer field and ample open greenspace, recreation options are plentiful. Vibrant art is dispersed throughout the park, including the tunnel connecting Mott Park to the Mott Park Recreation Area, a 70-acre greenspace situated along the Flint River. It features a disc golf course, fishing pier, picnic areas and ample greenspace. The park is popular for football matches, picnics and gatherings. A paved trail was recently installed in the park, making it easier for residents to run, walk and push strollers through the space.
“It’s even a very nice place to stay when it's snowing,” Briggs says. “You’ve got this big old hill, and there’s usually a basket of sleds that people put in there. So if you don't have a sled, you can just come to the neighborhood and use one of the sleds that's in the basket.”
Mott Park is also home to several events hosted by neighborhood association partners. There’s a youth soccer league with Flint Style Soccer, an annual Turkey Trott hosted by Whaley Children's Center and a slew of activities put on by Crim.

Classic, affordable homes
Longstanding homes of various architectural styles line the curving roads of Mott Park. Cottages, bungalows, Dutch Colonials and Four Squares builds are most common, but there are also tons of custom homes. Nolen Drive is especially known for its well-kept, historic houses, ranging from classic Colonial Revivals to sprawling Tudors. The median year built is 1927, whereas surrounding communities were developed in the 1950s. Established maple and evergreen trees tower above the 1,200-square-foot homes, creating a sense of seclusion while shading the sidewalks below. Long driveways lead to garages and separate the 5,600 square-foot lots. Handyman specials cost between $20,000 to $60,000, while move-in ready options range between $70,000 and $180,000. “If you want to raise a family at a decent price, it's a really nice place to stay,” Diggs says.

A convenient location for shopping, dining, traveling and more
Briggs says that as far as location, Mott Park doesn't disappoint. “When you look at a neighborhood, you look at schools, hospitals, grocery stores, and have all three within a small radius, which is a very big thing for most people,” he says.
Mott Park is almost entirely residential, but shopping and dining can be found 4 miles west on Corunna Road. There are big box stores, including Walmart and Sam's Club, along with chains such as Big John Steak & Onion and Taco Bell. It's also home to Dom's Diner, a local favorite known for its expansive, southern-influenced breakfast menu. For a quick bite just outside of the neighborhood’s boundaries, North Ballenger Highway is home to Papa’s Drive Thru, a popular spot to grab Flint-style coney dogs. There’s also a Save A Lot for grocery needs. Downtown Flint, which has undergone a massive revitalization effort in the past decade, is also nearby.
Flushing Road and Chevrolet Avenue are the largest thoroughfares just outside of Mott Park, but the nearest freeway, Interstate 69, is about 3 miles south. Interstate 75 is 4 miles west and provides the most direct route to Bishop International Airport, 6 miles southwest. Both Hurley Medical Center and McLaren Hospital are within a 2-mile radius of Mott Park and have 24-hour emergency rooms as well as various specialty treatment centers.
