Westgate is right next door to GM's auto assembly plant
Westgate is in southwest Flint, about 3 miles from downtown. It's primarily residential, with evenly spaced lots, some slightly curved streets and sidewalks with tree cover. The neighborhood is close to three interstates: 69, 75 and 475. Directly to the west is the General Motors Flint Assembly plant, one of the biggest employers in the city. Flint is known as the Vehicle City for its history as an automobile manufacturing hub, though much of the production has long ceased. Other significant job sites include McLaren Flint hospital and Bishop International Airport, both about 4 miles away. City buses with the Mass Transit Authority (MTA) serve the neighborhood with stops along West Atherton, Fenton and Van Slyke roads.
The historic General Motors Flint Assembly Plant is still the largest employer in Westgate.

Lots of single-family homes and some townhouses
Westgate offers townhouses in addition to single-family homes, which are greater in number. There are moderately more owner-occupants than renters. Homes are typically from the 1950s through the '70s, though some are from more recent decades. Options include Ranch-style homes, split levels, Cape Cods and colonials. Driveways and garages or carports are standard; some homes have basements. Prices are generally in the $70,000s to the $200,000s. Homes on the high end may be over 2,000 square feet. Townhouses were built in the 1960s and '70s and have estimated values from about $70,000 to $116,000. "The housing prices are actually going up quite a bit, but the cost of living is still relatively low compared to Grand Blanc," says Realtor Kevin Flowers. The agency he's with, Keller Williams First, is based in Grand Blanc, a neighboring city.
The Westgate neighborhood has many living options for locals, including many townhomes.

Flint has had challenges, but some see it as improving
Flint has had challenges over the decades, including discriminatory housing policies like redlining, blight, crime and municipal neglect. Though Flint's water was declared safe by the EPA a few years after the lead contamination crisis of 2014, it's still recommended that all tap water be filtered before drinking. "Especially with the water crisis, there's a negative narrative that Flint doesn't deserve. Honestly, Flint is on the come up. Quite a few neighborhoods throughout the city are quiet and friendly," Flowers says, mentioning that he considers the general area in those categories.
Outdoor recreation and a park inspired by a historic labor strike
Gerholz Park, a small park in the neighborhood, has tennis courts. Larger parks close to home include Sitdowners Memorial Park and Broome Park. "Sitdowners Memorial Park has greenery and nice views and sculptures. You can spend a lot of time there looking at everything there," Flowers says. The park is dedicated to the General Motors employees who waged a sit-down strike in collaboration with the United Auto Workers. The strike lasted from December 30, 1936, to February 11, 1937, and marked a historic point in the American labor movement and industry unionization. Broome Park has a baseball diamond, soccer fields and a play area. North of the neighborhood, on the other side of I-69, there's Swartz Creek Valley Park with Swartz Creek Municipal Golf, the Flint Tennis Club and the Flint Skate Park.
Sitdowners Memorial Park statue represents the Women's Emergency Brigade.
From little league to adult leagues, everyone can enjoy baseball at Broome Park.

To the east, Fenton Road has some stores and restaurants, like Mija's Los Panchos Mexican Home Cooking and Sherman's Lounge, a tavern hosting live music acts. Slightly farther south, there's a Kroger on Bristol Road. Also on Bristol is Donna's Donuts, recommended by Flowers: "They have the best donuts in the county, in my humble opinion." A few miles south of Westgate, US 23 Drive-In Theater shows double-feature films from April through September.
For local produce and goods, the Flint Farmers' Market is held downtown on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays all year. Some of the events at the market are the Flint Handmade Spring Craft Market in April, Pavilion Opening Day in May and the Christmas in July Night Market.
