Flint's history and challenges, including the water crisis
Flint, which grew in the early 20th century as a hub for the General Motors Corporation, has many neighborhoods with a history as working-class communities. Southside was one of the areas where African Americans were impacted by discriminatory real estate practices like restrictive covenants and redlining, which were outlawed in 1968. Municipal neglect and blight brought challenges to Flint for decades. In 2014, it became known that the city's water was contaminated with lead. By 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency had deemed the water safe, though it's still recommended that a filter be used for all tap water for drinking.
Neighborhood spots include a convenience store and a boxing club
There's a convenience store in the neighborhood, and on the same block is Flint Town Boxing Club. "There's a lot of locals, a lot of kids who come in. The majority are 14 to 25, but some of the people are in their late 40s," says Tim Hall, head coach and owner of the boxing club. The club is volunteer-based and free for participants. "That's how we grew up. Boxing is a sport; it gets people off the street. They aren't out there getting stabbed or shot. This is a pretty good neighborhood, but it depends on who you hang out with, like anywhere," Hall says. "I get kids in there that can't do pushups. They stay, and within two to three months, they are doing pushups, they are doing everything. In three to six months, they go to tournaments, and within a year, they are great fighters. We take them all over the place, all around the country."
