Relatively affordable and modestly sized homes in Sterling and Myrtle
Sterling and Myrtle is a small, northwestern Flint neighborhood close to parks. The area, which includes Sterling and Myrtle streets, is about 4 miles from downtown Flint. "The thing about Flint is that the cost of living is relatively low compared to surrounding cities," says Kevin Flowers, a Realtor with Keller Williams First. "In general, on average, you are looking at smaller, more affordable houses."
Bungalows and Cape Cods from the 1950s and '60s are common
The neighborhood has a variety of homes, typically under 1,200 square feet. Many date to the 1950s and '60s, including bungalows and Cape Cods. Basements, carports, garages and fenced yards are some of the features. Sidewalks connect the lots, which are fairly close together, on gridded streets with plenty of trees. Prices range from about $17,000 to $83,000. "If somebody is looking for a house under $100,000, they'll find it with minimal issues," Flowers says.
Two parks within walking distance of the neighborhood
Max Brandon Park, known by some as Forest Park, is east of the neighborhood. It's one of Flint's largest open spaces, with over 100 acres, including trails, a basketball court and boardwalks through restored wetlands. Events at the park have included nature photography hikes and the Juneteenth Celebration Parade. To the north, Flint Lake Park, once the site of an amusement park, is now a quiet natural space popular for fishing.
Some stores are close by, others are within a couple of miles
In the neighborhood's southeast section is Prince Party Store, a small convenience store. To the north, between the parks, is Mr. B's Supermarket. To the west, along Clio Road and Pasadena Avenue, are some businesses, including Big John Steak & Onion, a Michigan sandwich chain established in Flint. Within a couple of miles, there's the Hallwood Plaza shopping center, which has some shops and eateries like Moni's Hibachi. Downtown's Flint Farmers' Market is on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays all year and puts on special events like the Flint Handmade Spring Craft Market in April, the Pavillion Opening Day in May and the Christmas in July Night Market.
Kids may attend public schools, including a STEM academy
Kids may attend Brownell STEM Academy, which serves kindergarten through fifth grade and earns a D grade from Niche. Holmes STEM Middle School Academy, for sixth through eighth grades, has a 2 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools. Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, for seventh through 12th grades, has a C from Niche. The academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate World School. The Schools of Choice program for Flint Community Schools allows students to attend other schools in the district. There are also several charter schools in the area.
Bus service, short commutes and Interstate 75 nearby
Mass Transit Authority (MTA) buses serve the neighborhood with several routes and stops on surrounding streets. About 2 miles west of the neighborhood, there's access to Interstate 75. Sterling and Myrtle residents with a short commute include employees of the McLaren Flint hospital, about 3 miles away, and General Motors Flint Assembly plant, about 6 miles away. Bishop International Airport, about 8 miles to the south, has carriers United Airlines, American Airlines and Allegiant Air.
The EPA cleared the water system, but filters are still used
Flint's water contamination crisis was at its peak in 2014. A few years later, the Environmental Protection Agency declared the water safe, but filtering tap water for drinking is still advised.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
