Creekwood
Midcentury modern homes with quarter to half acre yards
Two white brick pillars welcome residents into the Creekwood neighborhood. Modest single-family homes with three- to four-bedrooms line both sides of the winding residential streets. Built between the 1970s and ‘80s, the homes typically reflect a similar ranch-style architecture with multi-color brick facades. Many have low-pitched roofs with gabled dormer windows bringing light into their dark, lofty attics. Some larger colonial-style homes toward the back of the neighborhood have stone pediments. Most of the lot sizes range from about a quarter to half-acre. Many have fenced-in backyards with in-ground pools and surrounding hardscapes. Others have plenty of green space and room to add a trampoline, a back deck or a small swing set. Creekwood is one of the more expensive neighborhoods in Florence. Still, Samantha Lamb, a local Realtor with South Main Realty, says the prices “are pretty much the same as any of the other northern suburbs.” Typically, a single-family home here ranges from about $250,000 to $400,000, but some of the larger homes on the neighborhood’s north side can cost closer to $550,000.The Florence Freshman Center opened in 2014
Florence City Schools consistently rank as some of the best in the state, with the district earning an overall A on Niche. Forest Hills Elementary is an A-rated school about 2 miles from Creekwood. It feeds into the fifth through sixth-grade program at the Hibbett School, which scores an A-minus. Florence Middle also gets an A-minus, while Florence High receives a B-plus. In 2014, the high school opened its Florence Freshman Center to help ease the transition out of middle school. After ninth grade, students can continue with a traditional curriculum or enroll in one of the school’s 13 career programs. Though the city offers high-ranking public schools, there are several private options, including Mars Hill Bible School right next door.Deibert Park sits right across the street
Creekwood is wedged between two of Florence’s most popular outdoor attractions. Deibert Park occupies about 70 acres of fenced-in land across Cox Creek Parkway. It has paved trails that loop around small ponds open for fishing only on select weekends during the summer. A central pavilion with restrooms and shaded picnic tables is next to a farm-themed playground. The Children’s Museum of the Shoals sits by the park’s entrance. It has 20 new interactive exhibits with themes ranging from construction to music. Anyone can schedule a tee time and pay to play at the Blackberry Trail Golf Course, about a mile north of Creekwood. Along with 18 holes of Tifdwarf Bermuda greens, the municipal course features a fully stocked golf shop and an on-site snack bar and grill.A main commercial corridor is right down Cox Creek Parkway
Creekwood’s entrance is less than a mile from where the city’s main commercial corridor begins. At the intersection of Mall Road and Cox Creek Parkway, retail strips and large shopping centers line both sides of the street. There are typical department stores like Dillard’s and Belk at Florence Mall, and retailers like Ulta and Target right across the street in the Cox Creek Shopping Center. Walmart, Publix and other independent power centers dot the area, too. Most restaurants here are national franchises, but a few hole-in-the-wall spots are tucked into the smaller retail strips on Mall Road. Casa Mexicana Restaurant is one of these rarities, serving what locals say are ‘some of the best margaritas in town.’ More local businesses, from boutiques to award-winning tapas restaurants, are about 4 miles south in Downtown Florence.Cox Creek Parkway and Darby Drive intersect next to Creekwood
Creekwood sits south of the North Florence Industrial Park, at the Cox Creek Parkway and Darby Drive intersection. It’s about 4 miles from Downtown Florence and 3 miles from the small northwestern town of St. Florian. “That area is right on the edge of our city limits,” Lamb says. “It gets more rural the further north you go.” North Alabama Medical Center is about 5 miles south of Creekwood. Its campus sits east of State Road 157, which crosses the Tennessee River and links to the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport in about 5 miles. This one terminal airstrip only offers one- to two daily flights to Charlotte, North Carolina. For all other flights, “we usually drive out to Huntsville International,” says a longtime local, Sarah Heckert. U.S. Highway 72 is a direct throughway to Downtown Huntsville, easily accessible via Cox Creek Parkway.
