A historic downtown district and social hub of the Shoals region
Downtown Florence is the social hub of the Shoals area, a quad-city region along the Tennessee River. Throughout the year, First Friday’s events transform Court Street into “one giant block party,” Samantha Lamb says. A University of North Alabama graduate and local Realtor with South Main Realty, Lamb says, “local vendors line up and down the street, and there’s live music everywhere.” Even on weeknights, folks can head downtown to hear a local band play at one of the bars or restaurants. Along with a busy social calendar and central amenities, Downtown Florence offers a variety of historic homes dating back to the 1800s.
Most homes are historic, dating back to the late 1800s
Sidewalk-lined residential blocks center around Court Street in Downtown Florence. Nearly all the homes here were built between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Architectural styles range from Cape Cods and bungalows to stately Greek Revivals and Queen Annes. Prices here vary based on the home’s condition and age. “The big, well-preserved homes in the historic districts are usually most expensive,” Lamb says. The listings along Walnut Street and Wood Avenue usually range between $400,000 to $875,000. But most of the homes downtown cost between $125,000 and $250,000.

Arts centers, the local library and community events at Wilson Park and
Sidewalks link Court Street to the historic fountain at Wilson Park. Usually a quiet, passive green space, the park transforms for city events. It hosts Easter egg hunts each spring, the W.C. Handy Musical Festival in July and the Alabama Renaissance Fair each fall. The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library and the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts are across the street from Wilson Park. The historic Shoals Community Theatre produces all kinds of events, from plays to comedy shows.

Local businesses in historic storefronts, and national retailers on Florence Boulevard
A collection of local businesses occupy the area’s Main Street-style storefronts. There’s farm-to-table dining at Odette, homemade pastas at Ricatoni’s Italian Grill and gourmet hotdogs at Wildwood Tavern. “You can go to FloBama nearly any night of the week to hear live music,” says Lamb. Along with restaurants and bars, Court Street has several specialty stores. Billy Reid, a luxury men’s clothing brand, opened its flagship store downtown in 2004. Groceries and big box stores are a few miles away on Florence Boulevard, and more national retailers are just a bit further east on Cox Creek Parkway.
