Historical markers and schoolhouse in Timrod Park
When motorists drive south on Irby Street, about a mile from Downtown Florence, they will see a thick canopy of lush trees that make up the community of Timrod Park. Beloved for its park and proximity to downtown, the neighborhood is named after Civil War-era poet, teacher and South Carolina native Henry Timrod. Following the war, he taught in a building now known as the Henry Timrod Schoolhouse. The one-room building was relocated to its present site in the heart of Timrod Park, where numerous historical markers tell the story of the man and the schoolhouse.
