Fond Du Lac found at the bottom of Lake Winnebago
Fond Du Lac is French for “bottom of the lake”, fitting for this Wisconsin city that sits on the southernmost point of Lake Winnebago. With a park along the shoreline offering beaches and fishing tournaments throughout the year sponsored by the city, Fond Du Lac residents spend their time outside. Still, life in Fond Du Lac isn’t all about the lake — the city has a downtown area full of local restaurants and plans to bring more action to the city to continue to engage its 44,000 residents.

Lakeside Park's lighthouse, beaches and carousel
True to its name, Lakeside Park is one the far north side of Fond Du Lake, stretching 145 acres alongside Lake Winnebago. The lighthouse serves as an iconic landmark for residents, overlooking the beaches and fishing piers. People can launch watercraft on the lake or canoe and kayak on the channel in the park. The park also offers more than just lakeside activities, like its carousel, train ride and petting zoo. In downtown Fond Du Lac, Veterans Park is only 1 acre, honoring the city’s and the county’s veterans. It also serves as the launching point for important events, like the annual holiday parade and tree lighting.

Coming changes and improvements to Fond Du Lac
Fond Du Lac is working on improving its amenities for its residents. “They’re adding an amphitheater and revamping the bridges and the walking paths,” says lifelong Fond Du Lac resident Amy Teifke and Realtor with Adashun Jones Real Estate. “Everything is concrete walking paths and there’s a bike trail through the area.” The city is also redoing the beaches along the lake and working to bring more live music downtown and its restaurants.

Lakeside Park hosts annual fishing tourneys, like Sturgeon Spectacular in February and Walleye Weekend in June, though the festivals both include more than just fishing. In September, Fondue Fest set the record for the largest fondue pot and draws people from all over for cheese and chocolate fondue.

Art exhibits and local restaurants in downtown Fond Du Lac
Downtown Fond Du Lac’s brick Italianate buildings hosting local restaurants and small businesses line Main Street, mostly between Division Street and Merrill Avenue. Also here, the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts offers art exhibits, hosts concerts, shows films and even has a book club. Downtown is where most of Fond Du Lac’s dining scene is, with only a handful along the water. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a ton of restaurants on the lake,” Teifke says. “There’s a couple you can drive your boat right up to, but not like those in Oshkosh.” Over on the western side of the city, shopping centers with supermarkets and big box stores sit around the intersection of Interstate 41 and Johnson Street.

Driving throughout Fond Du Lac and up Lake Winnebago
No buses or trains serve the Fond Du Lac community, so residents will need to use a car to get around the city. Main Street runs down the center of the city, connecting downtown and Lakeside Park, while Johnson Street runs perpendicular to it. I-41 is along the western side, while US Route 151 is on the eastern border, both cradling the community and taking residents up either side of Lake Winnebago. The southwestern corner of the community features the areas major employers, including manufacturing plants and the world headquarters for Mercury Maine.
In the winter, Fond Du Lac can get significant snowfall, but the city has systems to support the community. It treats the roads with salt before storms and plows once snowing starts. Despite this, Teifke says that Fond Du Lac’s culture extends throughout the seasons. “In the winter, there’s lots of snowmobiling, and in the summers, it’s more of the festivals at Lakeside Park,” she says.
