Bethel offers a scenic setting with fishing and hiking nearby
Picture a rural outdoor oasis anchored by a 350-acre lake open to fishing, swimming and boating and surrounded by hiking and camping hubs — the type of expanse you can spend all day enjoying. Now imagine if this space was minutes from your doorstep. That’s one of the advantages of living in Bethel, a swath of Armstrong County. “It’s very park-like, a very beautiful recreation area,” says local Realtor and area resident Elaine Shetler-Libent of Keller Williams.

Homes range from log cabins to new builds on spacious lots
The homes nearby showcase a good bit of variety. “You’ll have any kind of home,” Shetler-Libent says. “There are log cabins there. You have builders here too, so there are new builds. Any kind of housing that you want.” Many of Bethel’s houses were built in the early-to-mid 20th century in particular, and homes come in an array of styles. A quality houses here share is that most of them stand on expansive lots, usually about 10,000 square feet at minimum and up to more than a dozen acres in some cases. Properties here border winding, narrow country roads that are otherwise lined by thick patches of forest. Homes in Bethel often sell for prices between $100,000 and $200,000.

Lake area includes fishing, swimming and sports facilities
This area’s homes are no more than a handful of miles from Crooked Creek Lake. This spot is manmade, created by the construction of the Crooked Creek Dam in the 1930s. The lake is a hotspot for anglers. “The fishing is excellent,” Shetler-Libent says. “We go fishing there quite often.” Shetler-Libent says species you can catch include muskie, bass, panfish and crappie. Tunnelville Beach is a sandy spot by the water where residents can go for a swim. Those who don’t want to be on the water can enjoy the land around the lake. The Spillway Recreation Area here features a playground, a couple of volleyball courts, a basketball court and a baseball field. Crooked Creek Campground has 45 spots, and is near a disc golf course. Five trails wind around the lake, too, like the 134-mile Baker Trail.

Family-style restaurant and grocery stores are close by
Ryan’s Creek House is a local dining favorite near Crooked Creek Lake. “They’re good. It’s a family type of large restaurant,” Shetler-Libent says. “The mac and cheese and their smoked meats are really, really delicious. They have everything you can think of.” One of the signatures of Ryan’s Creek House is its hefty fish sandwiches, stuffed with a big, beer-battered cod fish filet. If you have a home-cooked meal in mind, you can follow Route 66 north into Kittanning for grocery shopping, where options include a Walmart, an ALDI and a Shop 'n Save.
