Neighborhood lot sizes are significantly larger than those found in communities closer to Olympia-Tumwater. Trails in Capitol State Forest and hunting in Scatter Creek

The Theodore Hoss Sports Complex in the center of Grand Mound hosts the local Little League and youth soccer club. A few miles north of town, Scatter Creek Wildlife Area offers over 3,500 acres of natural habitat that’s perfect for birdwatching and wildlife observation. This area is particularly popular with hunters during the appropriate seasons, but it also provides a serene environment for those simply looking to connect with nature. However, the area’s most prominent outdoor attraction is Capitol State Forest. Located 7 miles west of town, the 110,000 acre state forest boasts about 150 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails and more than 90 miles of trails for motorized vehicles.

However, Thurston County’s Intercity Transit provides bus services in nearby communities, and there are park-and-ride facilities for those who commute to Olympia. For those needing to travel farther afield, the Centralia Amtrak station offers rail service connecting to Seattle, Portland and beyond.

Farm and feed shops, plus the Great Wolf Lodge

Retail options in Grand Mound mostly revolve around construction and agriculture. Its small downtown area is home to VJ's Builder Barn, Tractor Supply Co., True Value Hardware and not much else. The Great Wolf Lodge, a major indoor water park and resort, is one of the most prominent landmarks in Grand Mound and brings with it several dining options, including Lodge Wood Fired Grill and Barnwood, both of which offer casual dining experiences with a focus on hearty, American-style cuisine. There are a few chain restaurants in town, but the most popular eatery is Talking Cedar, a distillery, brewery and restaurant that draws visitors from all over the Olympia-Tumwater area. For everyday needs, residents often visit the nearby Rochester area, located 5 miles west of Grand Mound, where they can find Bailey's IGA supermarket, and a few local restaurants.
