Located just an hour south of downtown Atlanta, Forsyth is a small town of about 4,000 residents along Interstate 75. It’s a desirable locale for families and young professionals due in part to its walkable downtown square packed with shops and restaurants and highly rated schools. Although housing costs in Forsyth are higher than nearby Macon, the area offers more new construction homes and bigger lots on the outskirts of town.

Forsyth has an A-graded school district
Kids can attend Monroe County Schools, which is graded A by Niche. Niche also ranks the district 11th in Georgia school systems and 11th for districts with the best teachers. The district has three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, all of which are rated A-minus or higher. High schoolers can choose from one of 12 Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathways. A new Monroe County College and Career Academy should be completed by the start of the school year in August 2025.
Monroe County Middle School has a 15 to 1 student to teacher ratio.

Downtown square is packed with shops and restaurants
The Monroe County Courthouse anchors Forsyth’s town square, a tree-lined hub of restaurants and boutiques. The red brick Victorian courthouse was built in 1896 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Grits Café is known for upscale Southern cuisine like shrimp and grits, praline chicken, and Asiago grits fritters. A group of Forsyth residents banded together in 2018 to create Fox City Brewing, a local watering hole and gathering place with bar fare and house-made brews in an unhurried atmosphere. Groceries are available in town at Ingles and Walmart Supercenter. Locals can eat at the iconic Whistle Stop Café — the iconic restaurant from the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” — in Juliette, about 15 minutes away from downtown Forsyth.

Forsyth has homes in nearly every size, style and price. Some of the Craftsman-style bungalows and cottages in town were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but most of the downtown area is commercial. Housing has expanded to new developments on the outskirts of town and once-rural areas, and homes in new housing additions tend to sit on larger lots. The median price of a home is about $400,000, which is much higher than Macon’s median of about $200,000. Homes in town tend to range from about $200,000 to nearly $500,000, while new builds in the gated River Forest Golf Community can range from $600,000 to $1.2 million.

City parks, agritourism and High Falls State Park
The city is home to six parks and Forsyth Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. The cascading waterfalls of High Falls State Park are 15 minutes away. Named for the falls on the Towaliga River, it’s a favorite for boating, fishing, hiking and paddling. Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area offers public hunting on nearly 6,000 acres, while Lake Juliette is a prime bird-watching spot for a variety of ducks. Locals and visitors can get a taste of local produce at Hamlin Farms, an agritourism attraction with pick-your-own strawberries, peach orchards, unique antiques and a petting zoo. Back in town, the arts are alive at Rose Theater, a historic theater that hosts community plays and musicals, and the Monroe County Fine Arts Center, 1,200-seat venue that opened in 2017.

An hour south of downtown Atlanta
There’s no public transportation, so cars are a must for most residents. However, the town square is highly walkable. Interstate 75 — a major Georgia highway — runs through the heart of Forsyth, connecting residents to Macon less than 25 miles away and Atlanta, about 60 miles north. Emergency medical care is available in town at Monroe County Hospital.
Forsyth Farmers Market and the annual Forsythia Festival
Forsyth has a slate of events to keep residents entertained all year round. The Forsyth Farmers Market runs from May through October, and the Main Street concert series draws residents to the town square six months out of the year. Downtown is transformed into a block party during the New Year’s Eve Forsythia Ball Drop. Spring kicks off with the annual Forsythia Festival, a free two-day celebration with live entertainment, vendors, an arts and crafts show and more.
