Lakeport is small, remote community on the shores of Lake Huron
On the western shore of Lake Huron, the small community of Lakeport sits in the larger Burtchville Township. Lakeport neighbors meet up for trivia night at the community’s sole tavern, buy groceries from a family-owned market and grab ice cream from a longstanding shop at the end of town. "There's a little bar and grocery store here, and it's a cute little area," says Realtor Merrilyn Bush with Realty Executives Home Towne, a veteran seller in the Port Huron area. Though 20 minutes from Port Huron, Lakeport is close to everyday conveniences while offering a quiet, lakeside life with parks and cottages.
Beachfront parks offer hiking and camping opportunities
The town is surrounded by Lakeport State Park, a vast natural area that includes rocky beaches, hundreds of campsites, and hiking and cycling paths. A campground store sells outdoor essentials, and a playground includes horseshoe pits for additional recreation. Lakeport is also just north of Fort Gratiot County Park, which offers additional beachfront access, a playground of its own and a monument to Detroit’s water department employees. "You can go out west from there and there's farm area, and its parks are right on the water," Bush says.
Lakeport is full of condos and single-family homes built from the 1950s to 1990s
Though the middle third of Lakeport is occupied by the state park, the community has over 500 residences, most built from the 1950s to '90s. Nearly every property was built in the ranch style, but housing options vary from condos to separate residences. Condos near the heart of the community have estimated values between $90,000 and $230,000, while those close to the water are worth between $371,000 and $500,000. Single-family homes range in value from $110,000 to $260,000. Lakeport’s houses tend to be separated by sizable lawns, while an abundance of trees offer shade and privacy among narrow streets that lack sidewalks.
Small businesses serve as the gathering places for this community
A handful of small businesses serve as gathering places for neighbors and provide for locals’ daily needs. The Lakeport Market offers a comprehensive array of grocery amenities from an extensive wine section to a deli stocked with all kinds of meats and cheeses. A Dollar General offers additional everyday goods for sale. The Lakeport Tavern, founded in 1937, is where friends and family go for trivia nights and live music performances while chowing down on burgers, fish and chips and other pub classics. For a grab-and-go meal, Lakeshore Smokehouse serves up ribs and other barbecue items from a small wooden building just off Lakeshore Road. Pepperoni Cow sells pizza and desserts, billing itself as the “Home of 100 Shakes.”
Student creativity is embraced at Port Huron schools
Students can start their education at Keewahdin Elementary School, which receives a B-minus rating from Niche, before attending the B-minus-rated Fort Gratiot Middle School and the B-plus-rated Port Huron Northern High School. Northern provides outlets for student creativity through its performing arts program, school radio station and news and sports-oriented student TV station.
Easy access to nearby urban centers and healthcare
Lakeport sits along Lakeshore Road, which connects this part of Burtchville Township with downtown Port Huron within a 20-minute drive and Detroit in just over an hour. The nearest hospital, the Lake Huron Medical Center, is a 10-minute drive down the same road.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
