A forested village deep in the heart of St. Clair County
The small community of Ruby comes across as a classic frontier town deeply immersed in the wilderness of St. Clair County. It has a single community church, and the nearest schools and cities are miles away. "Ruby is very rural. It's got one little general store, and that area is hilly," says Merrilyn Bush, a Realtor with Realty Executive Home Towne. "It's beautiful out there. It's farms and valleys, and hunting is a big deal." However, a nearby interstate offers a 20-minute journey into Port Huron, ensuring the city amenities are never far. Plus, industrial jobs are just minutes from home.
Ample opportunities for hiking, hunting and boating
Surrounded by forests, this section of Clyde Township offers hiking, hunting and boating. The Bruce Trail and Ford Trail follow local roads, with plenty of hiking and camping, and there's a boat launch at the confluence of winding Mill Creek and the Black River. The extensive Port Huron State Game Area is accessible to the southwest and southeast.
Midcentury and 1990s-built single-story properties line Ruby's streets
Homes in Ruby include classic ranch-style to Cape Cod-influenced properties. Homes from the 1950s and '60s range from $140,000 to $180,000, while 1990s-built homes recently sold for $205,000 to $355,000. Ruby’s streetscapes have a strongly rural character, as most of the roads at the center of town are made from gravel, with only the winding Brott Road being paved. The lack of sidewalks and the narrow width of Ruby’s roads leads to lawn sizes much larger than in most suburbs, creating opportunities for sizable gardens and trees.
Strong athletics and extracurriculars at Port Huron High
Students can start their education at Indian Woods Elementary School, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche, before attending C-rated Central Middle School. Port Huron High School, which receives a B rating, is known for its fierce athletic rivalries with Port Huron Northern High School and for its musical extracurriculars like the school band and its musical theater program.
Quick access to Port Huron and healthcare
Abbottsford Road connects Ruby to major interstate highways, making Port Huron accessible within a 20-minute journey and Detroit within just over an hour’s trek. Ruby is also approximately 15 minutes from the Lake Huron Medical Center’s North Campus.
Groceries and food are accessible within 10-minute journeys
Though Ruby does not have any restaurants or grocery stores of its own, convenience is never far away. Just 6 minutes up Beard Road, the Dorsey House has stood out as a cherished local institution for decades. In fact, this restaurant is only a decade younger than the state of Michigan, having been founded in 1847. This well-established local business offers a vintage dining experience with its wooden chairs, its old-timey carpet and a motto that declares it to be the place “where your grandfather ate & drank!” Its menu features a wide variety of cuisines, from fish and chips to ribeye steak, pasta Alfredo and pizza. Grocery options are also close by. "They've got a small general store, so people there commute into Wadhams for everything," Bush says. Ruby is 10 minutes down Abbottsford Road from the Avoca Market and the same distance from Vinckier Foods down the road in Wadhams.
