Belle Haven

Belle Haven’s diverse housing market
Early to mid-20th-century homes line streets that often spread into cul-de-sacs. Belle Haven has many styles of homes, including picturesque Cape Cods, ranch-style dwellings and colonials. Dutch Colonial Revivals are also common here, and so are condos in townhomes. Holly Tennant Billy, a Realtor with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty who has sold homes in Belle Haven, says, “There are more detached homes here than in Alexandria City. Locals here enjoy more spacious properties, and the cost per square footage is going to be lower than in Alexandria City.” Properties here range from around $200,000 for a condo to upwards of $1.5 million for a larger property. The median price for a single-family dwelling here is around $845,000. Many homes have attached garages or driveways for residents to park. Streets here are narrow and often feature sidewalks, creating a walkable feel to this suburban neighborhood. Some properties have fenced-in yards and feature cobble or brick pathways. Those wanting to be surrounded by nature enjoy the community’s mature, decorative trees that grow densely scattered around yards and sidewalks.Belle Haven Park, Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve and more
Bikers and hikers head on the popular Mount Vernon Trail, and those with dogs can enjoy some unleashed areas during their journey. Many also head to Belle Haven Park to enjoy trails that wind through wooded areas alongside the Potomac River. Nearby, kayakers and boaters explore the river at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, which is home to one of the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetlands in the Washington area. The preserve’s abundant bald eagle sightings also make it a popular spot among birdwatchers. The Belle Haven Marina is a popular spot for boaters and kayakers, and those who want to hone their sailing skills take classes from the Mariner Sailing School. Belle Haven is also home to the Fort Willard Historic Site, which contains a Union Army fort.
Belle Haven Country Club and the community’s social clubs
Many Belle Haven residents are part of the Belle Haven Country Club, which dates back to the early 20th century. Members of this community can get their laps in at the pool or head to the 18-hole golf course to practice their aim. Many swarm to the putting greens for the Belle Haven Four-ball invitational amateur golf tournament, and after a day outside, members sit down and enjoy a relaxing social environment at the pub or on the patio. Other community organizations add to the neighborhood’s social culture. The citizens association hosts annual events like a Fourth of July parade and Easter egg roll. The Belle Haven Garden’s Club, a subsection of the Belle Haven Women’s Club, hosts outreach projects and community parties, creating plenty of social opportunities for locals here.Local flavors: A pizzeria, custard shack and wine and craft beer bar
Many wanting to eat out here head to the Belle Haven Pizzeria to enjoy dishes made from fresh, local ingredients, some even coming from the establishment’s garden. For dessert, the next-door Custard Shack offers its customers homemade custards and sorbet, often featuring unique seasonal flavors. In the middle of the community, at the Shops at Belle View, locals can find everything from big-box grocers to a wine and craft beer bar. Safeway is a convenient pit-stop for grocery needs, while Unwined covers the wine pairings. At the attached bar, Revel, patrons enjoy an elevated dining experience with seasonal delicacies made from local ingredients, craft beer and unique wine offerings. Residents here will also have easy access to the many shopping centers that line the Richmond Highway, which runs along the western edge of Belle Haven. For a wider selection of dining opportunities many residents take the 2.3-mile drive via U.S. Route 1 to explore Old Town Alexandria’s wider selection of dining opportunities.Fairfax County Public School District
Students can enroll in the Fairfax County Public School District, which boasts a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1 and is ranked as the 6th best school district in Virginia. They can attend Belle View Elementary, which received a B rating from Niche, A-minus rated Sandburg Middle, which is a magnet school, and the B-plus rated West Potomac High. The high school offers AP classes and an Avid Program. Sophomores and Juniors can apply to enroll in the Governor’s School summer program to take STEM and visual and performing arts classes at Virginia universities.Transportation, commutes and major employers
Belle Haven is a car-dependent area, but bus stops are located throughout the community, particularly closer to its borders around the Richmond Highway and Washington Memorial Parkway. Bus stops are also common along Belle View Boulevard and Fort Hunt Road. Locals enjoy proximity to some of Fairfax County’s major employers, including Capital One and the Inova Health System. A Capital One location is just west of Belle Haven off the Richmond Highway, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is just 4 miles away. Travelers can head to the Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport, which is around 6 miles away via US-1 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway. They can take this parkway to get to downtown D.C., which is around 10 miles away, making Belle Haven convenient for commuters. Those wanting to get to Maryland can take Interstate 95 and Interstate 495, which will get them across the river.
