Bermuda Riviera
Beach a part of daily life
Residents can step out of their front door and be at the beach after a walk or bike ride of just about 1 mile — Monterrey regularly sees people cycling over to the sand. Earl Lifshey Ocean Park is among the closest beachfront areas, a spot with not as many crowds. Or locals can head slightly north to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Beach, which is notable in part for a pier that was damaged by storms in 2022 but is scheduled to be rebuilt in 2026. Friedt Park, in the neighboring town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, has a playground and basketball courts.Waterfront living, all around
Homes right on the water are more the norm than the exception in Bermuda Riviera, many of them lining canals connected to the Intracoastal Waterway, or directly on the Waterway. “Most of the homes are all on the canal,” says Monterrey, a longtime South Florida resident. “You can bring your boat to the back of the house.” Locals can easily hop on their boats and jet out to places like the Bahamas, just about three hours away. At home, residents can enjoy quiet neighborhood streets and lots with enough room for both front and back lawn space. Lots here are often around one-fifth of an acre, and many properties use the backyard room for inground pools. The houses themselves date back to the mid-20th century, but there are also options built after the turn of the 21st century. The neighborhood’s architecture is a mix of Mediterranean, new traditional and contemporary. The area has quite a few condos, too. Condos here can sell for prices from the $200,000s to around $800,000, while single-family homes come with price tags ranging from just over $1 million to more than $5 million.Local events aren’t hard to find
Bermuda Riviera residents can enjoy a wide range of events in the city. Fort Lauderdale Beach, for instance — just about 7 miles south — is home to the Tortuga Music Festival in early April, a three-day extravaganza filled with dozens of artists. Fort Lauderdale Beach is also the site of the Fort Lauderdale Air Show in May, which features exhibitions from groups such as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Ghost Squadron, which is part of an astronaut training program. Also, El Prado Park in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea hosts a farmers market on Sundays.Ocean View offers convenience
Locals here can head right out of the neighborhood and onto Ocean Boulevard for an assortment of restaurants and shops. “Shopping is right across the street,” Monterrey says. People can grab groceries and other essentials at Winn-Dixie, for example, or go hunting for a new beach outfit at the clothing store FL Waves. Hotspot eateries on Ocean Boulevard include Oceans Grille, known in part for its Mahi dishes, including the Mahi sandwich. Greek Islands Taverna, down the road, is so popular that it can be hard to secure a table. “People line up outside, you’d think they’re giving out free food,” Monterrey says.Local schools are well-regarded
Bermuda Riviera kids are served by the Broward County Public Schools system, which carries a B-plus overall rating on Niche. The Broward County district allows students to apply for campuses outside their attendance zones. But those in Bermuda Riviera may choose to start at nearby Bayview Elementary, an A-minus-rated school whose extracurricular opportunities include a speech and debate team. Then students can move on to the B-rated Sunrise Middle, which offers a Montessori magnet program. The A-rated Fort Lauderdale High includes a pre-law and public affairs magnet program.Glide around with the Circuit
Circuit, a network of free electric vehicles, can be used for rides up and down the coast, into Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Circuit is a taxi of sorts, and rides can be found via an app. This area is serviced by the Broward County Transit bus system as well, with stops lining Ocean Boulevard. Drivers in town can quickly access Interstate 95, a few miles west, for commutes throughout the rest of the region.
