Waterfront single-family houses
"The home prices are comparable to any single-family waterfront communities east of the Intracoastal," Schmidt says. Early-2000s fenced-in Mediterranean-style homes on the canals sell for between $2.5 million and $6 million. There is a plethora of other home styles on the canal as well. "There are no fixed bridges, so people can have 100-foot-long boats on their docks and take them out onto the ocean," A 1980s Modern-style single-family house sells for $6.5 million. Stucco-exterior ranch styles are valued between $1.7 million and $2.5 million. Many homes have spas and backyard pools. The least expensive houses do not have direct canal access. Most are 1960s ranch-style houses with Mediterranean features assessed between $1.5 million and $2.7 million. "The neighborhood fares well during tropical storms, as evidenced by the fact that most of the properties were built in the 50s and 60s and are still there," Schmidt says. Condos built in the 1960s sell for between $310,000 and $530,000, and early-2000s condos sell for around $820,000.
A nature preserve within walking distance
People can walk to the 180-acre Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, which is known as the "Central Park of Fort Lauderdale." Visitors explore the nature preserve along paved walking paths or paddle kayaks to see the mangroves, turtles and shore birds. An original Art Deco manor house now serves as the park's visitor center and offers exhibits about native fauna and local history. Dolphin Isles is home to Lu Deaner Park, a small neighborhood greenspace with a playground and plenty of space for a quiet picnic in the shade.
Moderately and highly rated public schools
The public schools are several miles west of the Intracoastal. Local children often begin their educations at the A-minus Niche-rated Bayview Elementary. Sunrise Middle School students are 50% proficient in math and 52% in reading. The school has a B Niche rating. Teens often move on to the A Niche-rated Fort Lauderdale High School, which offers Advanced Placement classes. Local private options include Cardinal Gibbons High, a Catholic school where students can choose from over 20 sports teams, try their hand at dance or theater and volunteer in their surrounding community.Community events and concerts
Fort Lauderdale's annual 4th of July Spectacular is held at the beach. Residents and visitors look forward to the food vendors, live music and a fireworks display. Dolphin Isles homeowners drive to Amerant Bank Arena to watch performances by musicians like Kid Cudi and comedians like Nate Bargatze. The Florida Panthers compete in professional hockey matches in the arena. Fort Lauderdale is also home to the NSU Art Museum, which has thousands of works.
Getting around Fort Lauderdale and beyond
Residents can catch the bus along North Ocean Boulevard on the community's eastern border, and they can travel 9 miles southwest to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport via Florida State Road A1A. Downtown Fort Lauderdale is 5 miles southwest via Florida State Road A1A and Florida 838. Pompano Beach is 9 miles northwest via Ocean Boulevard and East Oakland Park Boulevard. Residents can walk to restaurants, the beach and the nature preserve.
Local fine dining and big-box retail
Folks pull their yachts up at Mastro's Ocean Club to order plates of surf and turf and bottles of fine wine. Also overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, residents stop by Shooters Waterfront for eggs Benedict and mimosas. Martorano's is a local hit for its classic Italian fare. The Sandbar has an ideal patio for sipping margaritas and chowing burgers in front of the Atlantic Ocean. Residents can purchase groceries 3 miles north at the Publix in Sea Lakes Ranch, and they travel roughly a mile west to shop at retailers like Marshalls, Target and T.J. Maxx.
