Idlewyld
Boating is a way of life
The neighborhood is home to the 4-acre Idlewyld/Merle Fogg Park, a space designed for neighbors to enjoy group gatherings and leisurely strolls along the banks of the New River Sound, a small segment of the Intracoastal Waterway. Because the neighborhood is surrounded by water, small-engine ships and sailboats often circle the community. Boaters can also sail across the sound and dock their vessels at the Hall of Fame Marina, close to Las Olas Beach, known for its clean white sand and clear waters. But even those without a boat are less than a mile walk away. While easy access to water is a major selling point of the community, folks looking to buy here should bear in mind that this also means the community is at severe risk of flooding and extreme winds, particularly during hurricane season.Shopping, dining along Las Olas Boulevard
The neighborhood is primarily residential, but there is a small collection of salons and a single restaurant along Las Olas Boulevard. Residents rave about Chima Steakhouse, a laid-back, all-you-can-eat Brazilian spot popular among groups. And Publix is just a little farther down the road. But the shopping and dining scene along the boulevard really picks up closer to the Fort Lauderdale city center. There, folks can find countless restaurants, like Luigi's Tuscan Grill, an Italian eatery offering a fine dining experience. And for dinner by the beach, residents can walk, boat or drive to South Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, about 1 mile away.Multi-million-dollar homes with water views
Idlewyld is known for its diverse selection of striking homes on waterfront properties. "It's just so picturesque," says Adriana Resendez, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and former long-time resident. "There's not a day when I'm not in literal awe and admiration of the homes here," she says. "Every house is one of a kind." To that point, homebuyers can expect to find an array of options, including 20th-century ranches, two-story Key West-style dwellings, Colonial Revival and Mediterranean mansions and luxury waterfront condos. Entry-level single-family homes are often on the smaller side for the area but are by no means "small," starting around 2,000 square feet. They tend to have three to four bedrooms and sit snuggly on lots filled with lush tropical greenery. These homes often begin around $1.5 million and can go for as much as $2 million. Those looking for a little more space can snag a two-story, three- to six-bedroom estate for between $2 million and $5 million or a luxurious waterfront mansion with upwards of seven bedrooms for as much as $14 million. There is also a robust market for condos here, which includes waterfront units with private docks in the historic Four Seasons building. Options include one- to two-bedroom condos, which sell for between $400,000 and $600,000, and units with up to three bedrooms, which start around $665,000 and surpass $1.5 million. There are plenty of renter-friendly options, too, since apartments make up nearly 50 percent of the housing stock here. Of note: The community has a very active voluntary HOA. "It's really more for the security patrol at night for people who are gone for the weekend," Resendez says. She's been selling homes in the area for more than three years. "You can have people bring packages in when you're out of town, check on the house, things like that." Additionally, there is dockage along Idlewyld Drive that folks on dry lots can lease for easy access to their boats and the Intracoastal Waterway.Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show
The city of Fort Lauderdale hosts a few annual celebrations that draw in massive crowds. One such event is the 4-day Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Along with presentations at the Broward County Convention Center, folks can glean a glimpse at hundreds of boats parading through the Intracoastal or docked at nearby marinas like the Hall of Fame and Las Olas. Pride Fort Lauderdale is also a big deal, drawing in more than 40,000 people annually. It's the oldest Pride celebration in the state, and it's held just 2 miles from the community along State Route A1A near Fort Lauderdale Beach.Fort Lauderdale High is a certified magnet school
Idlewyld is served by well-rated Broward County Public Schools, including Harbordale Elementary School, graded an A-minus on Niche; Sunrise Middle School, graded a B; and Fort Lauderdale High School, graded an A. Fort Lauderdale High is a certified magnet school offering specialized pre-law and public affairs programs for students interested in legal studies, criminal justice and public service.U.S. Route 1 is nearby
The neighborhood is bordered by Las Olas Boulevard, which leads to downtown Fort Lauderdale, about 2 miles away. It also connects to U.S. Route 1, a busy commuter thoroughfare that runs along the East Coast. Many people get around by walking, biking or boating from place to place. However, public Broward County Transit buses are another option, picking up along the boulevard. The community is also just 7 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.Crime
Idlewyld has a CAP Index Score of 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. This is mainly due to higher-than-average property crime rates.
