Lauderdale Isles

Balancing waterfront homeownership with insurability
Most of the homes in Lauderdale Isles are single-story modern ranch styles, although there are a few two-story options peppered in. Some lots are large enough to accommodate an outdoor pool, and most homes come with a garage or a generous driveway. Homes can vary greatly in age, price and condition, with the newest builds easily topping $1.5 million and the oldest — some of which date to the mid-1950s — ranging from $600,000 to $800,000.Despite the old Florida charm, these established homes can pose issues for new homebuyers, as many lack the hurricane preparedness features that became standard following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. “The insurance companies are not thrilled about covering them,” says Tad Wootton, Broker associate with Compass and one of the city’s waterfront property experts. If another big storm were to hit South Florida, “anything built in the 1950s is going to have the roof blown off because they don’t have hurricane straps,” he says. Buyers considering an older home should also be aware of degraded cast iron pipes, which can create massive plumbing problems if left unchecked. Fortunately, most homes built after 1992 don’t have these issues, making them considerably easier to insure.
Shaded play time at Hays Civic Park
Lauderdale Isles Landing is home to the local yacht club, which has been a fixture of the community since the 1950s. In addition to a spacious boat ramp, the 4-acre landing includes tennis courts and a colorful playground bordered by palm trees and a paved pathway. To the north, Dr. Elizabeth Hays Civic Park is beloved for its spacious and shaded playgrounds. There’s also a roomy picnic shelter and plenty of lawn space for open play. Secret Woods Nature Center offers more than 50 acres of peaceful urban wilderness, although it’s currently closed for renovations following historic flooding in 2023. Golfers may appreciate living within a few miles of the Fort Lauderdale Country Club, and beachgoers have an easy, 10-mile trip to the shores of either Fort Lauderdale or Dania Beaches. And with only one fixed bridge between the neighborhood and the Intracoastal Waterway, boaters have a smooth ride to the open seas.
Pick up Latin specialties at Yuly Meats & Produce
Diners will find the closest restaurants and shops along U.S. Route 441, including local favorites such as the family-owned Vila’s Mexican & Cuban Restaurant. A few doors down, the longstanding Yuly Meats & Produce butcher shop provides locals with fresh cuts and Latin specialties like guava pastries and Cuban bread. The restaurant scene expands along Davie Boulevard, where Georgia Pig BBQ & Restaurant has been serving up classic, old-school open-pit barbecue since 1953. For everyday groceries, there’s a Publix Super Market and a Winn-Dixie a few blocks east.
Winterfest Boat Parade brings a wave of holiday spirit
Lauderdale Isles is just 6 miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale and about 8 miles from the beach, keeping residents close to some of the city’s most exciting events. Annual traditions include the St. Patrick’s Parade, the Tortuga Music Festival and a Fourth of July Spectacular, as well as art and food festivals in Las Olas. The city’s strong boating culture and festival atmosphere are on full display during the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade, a vibrant holiday event featuring Christmas-light-clad vessels. Lauderdale Isles Yacht Club also organizes its own holiday boat parade along with a handful of other nautical events.Stranahan High offers career magnet programs
Stranahan High, which scores a grade of B-minus on Niche, offers magnet programs for students who wish to study business management, art, medicine or education. The school also organizes a lively homecoming game, inviting alumni to perform in line with current marching band members. As part of Broward County, most students in Lauderdale Isles will attend Stephen Foster Elementary, which scores a C-plus, and New River Middle, which scores a B-minus.
Commuters can hop on the Port Everglades Expressway
With few fixed bridges in the area, boaters have nearly unfettered access to the city’s waterways. But Lauderdale Isles isn’t just convenient for aquatic commuters. Proximity to U.S. Route 441 puts drivers within minutes of the Interstate 595 interchange, also known as the Port Everglades Expressway. To the east, I-595 connects with Interstate 95 near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Local bus stops are available along Riverland Road, and there’s a convenient Amtrak station about 4 miles away. The city also runs a Water Trolley in the area, but it’s often packed with tourists.
