"I wouldn't live anywhere else"

Melrose Park, one of Fort Lauderdale’s westernmost neighborhoods, is a proud melting-pot community dedicated to retaining its neighborly character. “It’s a very large, diverse neighborhood with Haitians, African Americans and Jamaicans,” says Melrose Park Homeowners Association President Donna Guthrie, a resident since the 1990s. “Developers are always eyeing us, but we’re fighting against it. We want to remain a residential community; we don’t want big mansions or 10- to 20-story buildings.” The neighborhood’s location has much to do with its appeal. “I always say we’re 10 minutes from everything — the hospital, the interstate and the airport,” Guthrie says. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else, and I’ve lived all over the United States.”

Front yards filled with fruit trees

Melrose Park fills about 1 square mile of western Fort Lauderdale with residential roads arranged in a spoke-and-wheel pattern. This layout makes it safer than many surrounding neighborhoods, according to Guthrie. “People don’t come in here because at nighttime they’d get lost,” she says. “It’s like a maze.” Homes along Melrose Park’s spiderweb of streets are primarily stucco-sided ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s, some with backyard pools. Many front yards feature the area’s signature palm trees alongside less common species planted by residents from the Caribbean. “You see a lot of coconut and mango trees — there are mangoes everywhere,” Guthrie says. Houses range from two to five bedrooms; prices generally depend on each home’s level of upkeep. For instance, a three-bedroom rambler needing updates might cost around $230,000, while a recently renovated two-bedroom could cost $430,000. Homebuyers generally spend less than $600,000 on Melrose Park properties.

Parks, golf courses and the beach nearby

With the coast about 5 miles east, locals can generally travel from home to the beach in minutes. However, Melrose Park is even closer to several inland outdoor recreation areas. Shirley Small Park covers about 9 acres to the south and is within walking distance of many residents. Visitors can watch their little ones interact on the playground, traverse the trail along the park’s perimeter, and play tennis and basketball. A few blocks west of the neighborhood, Fort Lauderdale Country Club has offered an exclusive recreation experience since 1926. It’s home to two 18-hole golf courses and a swanky, Mediterranean-style clubhouse with a private bar and dining room.

Three public schools within 1 mile

Three schools in the Broward County Public Schools system serve Melrose Park’s youngest residents. Two operate within a few blocks of the neighborhood, including Westwood Heights Elementary School to the east. About 730 students from prekindergarten through fifth grade attend Westwood Heights Elementary, which has a C-minus score from Niche. Parkway Middle School is rated a C and is a few blocks north of the neighborhood. Over 2,200 ninth through 12th graders attend South Plantation High School, about 1 mile to the west. Rated a B, this high school hosts a magnet program focused on environmental science and restoring the Everglades.

"Mostly take-out places"

Guthrie says the neighborhood has yet to welcome a high-end dine-in establishment. “There are mostly take-out places, nowhere you can sit down and hang out,” she says. “If you want that experience, you have to go east of Interstate 95.” Locally owned establishments around Melrose Park include Chilangos Mexican Grill and Las Carnitas Latin Food, both offering Taco Tuesday specials. The neighborhood’s Caribbean character is reflected in eateries like La Belle Monique and Dutch Pot, which serve Haitian and Jamaican cuisines, respectively. Locals can run errands around the neighborhood at several pharmacies, Walmart Supercenter, and supermarkets like Publix and Winn-Dixie.

Access to I-95, the Amtrak and FLL

Bus stops appear throughout and around Melrose Park, offering rides every 20 to 60 minutes. I-95 is 1 mile east and can take drivers straight to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. An Amtrak station operates alongside the interstate, offering train rides to Miami, West Palm Beach and other destinations.

Beware heavy rains

Guthrie and other neighborhood representatives are working to get a quality drainage system in Melrose Park. “There are no storm drains in the neighborhood,” she says. “Last year, we had a lot of flooding.”
