A landscape of single-family homes

Originally built in the years following WWII as homes for returning war veterans, Poinsettia Heights has evolved into a quiet, suburban neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale, highly regarded for its proximity to shopping, good schools, and the beach. To maintain the area's suburban charm, organizations like the Poinsettia Heights Civic Association have helped pass laws that stop condos and townhouses from being built within the neighborhood, keeping them isolated to the area's borders. As a result, its residential zones are lined exclusively with single-family homes.

Dog walking at the Colohatchee Park

With the beach just over 3 miles away from anywhere in the neighborhood, residents frequently take quick trips to the coast to jog in the sand or ride the ocean waves. Anyone looking for a less crowded afternoon can visit George English Park, a 15-acre space with full basketball courts, tennis courts and boat access to the canals. Colohatchee Park is a mile west and features 7 acres of verdant mangrove preserve, a walking trail and a fenced-in dog park. "There are a lot of people who become friends based on walking their dogs together," says Alex Escobar, a broker associate with Re/Max who has served the area for 17 years. "The whole area is great for dog lovers."

Midcentury Modern with original terrazzo floors

Most homes tend to be bungalows and ranch-style, though new construction is constant, often bringing more eclectic, modern designs to the neighborhood. "Midcentury Modern homes are really popular here," says Escobar. "You're sometimes able to find original terrazzo floors. They're classic, basically indestructible, and beautiful." Prices start in the low-$500,000s for ranch-style homes, with Spanish-inspired Midcentury Modern designs beginning in the low-$800,000s. Riverside homes can go as high as $1.3 million.

A renaissance on the beach

Fort Lauderdale is a popular destination for people nationwide, so regular events and festivals are easy to find. The annual Tortuga Music Festival is heavily involved in the community, teaching visitors about conservation while sponsoring live performances by artists like Lainey Wilson, Jason Aldean and Bret Michaels. Those brave enough to combine Florida weather with pantaloons can visit the Florida Renaissance Festival, celebrated 15 miles north in the spring.

Convenient shopping and Gulf Stream beer

Anyone who needs to pick up groceries or give in to a bout of retail therapy is in luck at Poinsettia Heights. "The shopping in the area is really convenient," says Escobar. "Trader Joe's, Whole Foods—it's all just minutes away." On nights out, residents can try the Gulf Stream Brewery & Taproom and its rotating roster of more than 15 beers served alongside artisan Neapolitan pizza.

Pre-law programs at Fort Lauderdale High

Students in Poinsettia Heights might attend Bennett Elementary, which has a B-minus rating from Niche. From there, they could enroll in B-rated Sunrise Middle School before attending Fort Lauderdale High School, which scores an A and features a pre-law magnet program for students considering a career in the legal field. These same schools often benefit local adults as well, says Alex Collazo of the Poinsettia Heights Civic Association: "Since the opening of the City sponsored Joint Use Parks program, the local schools in the neighborhood are open for public use when school is not in session.

Not as bad as very urban areas, but traffic can be very heavy near downtown. Late morning usually has lighter traffic.

It really depends what you're looking for; the area is not as busy as Miami but is still very urban with plenty of events going on.
