Waterfront wildlife in River Oaks
The River Oaks neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale is known for its tropical, tree-shaded streets lined with older mid-to-large sized homes. “River Oaks is one of the best kept secrets of Fort Lauderdale. It has relatively reasonable home prices near downtown and the airport,” says Megan Romine, executive director of luxury sales and Realtor associate with Douglas Elliman. The area is also known for its dedication to sustainability and nature preservation. One housing development, La Preserve, was recognized in 2018 as a Certified Wildlife Habitat for its responsible maintenance practices around the neighborhood’s many species and ecosystems. River Oaks’ location along the South Fork New River, east of Interstate 95 and north of State Road 84, allows residents to live among wildlife without sacrificing proximity to everyday necessities and urban amenities.

Diverse home styles and River Oaks gated communities
Homebuyers can find many different architectural styles in River Oaks. Ranch styles with two to three bedrooms and long driveways sit beneath palm trees and among tropical shrubbery, typically selling between $500,000 and $1 million. Starting around $800,000, homes that line thin strips of the river and canals often feature private boating docks and pools, and one-to-two-bedroom condos often go for $200,000 to $350,000. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the late 1950s and have undergone some renovations. Newer, larger homes are clustered in River Oaks communities such as La Preserve. Founded in 2006, the gated area is full of four-to-five-bedroom Georgian homes that often start around $1 million. These properties are rigid in symmetry, have tall windows and sit among Oak trees, several species of palm trees and winding paths around calm lakes. Marina Landings is a new luxury gated community coming to River Oaks in 2025, offering flat-roofed homes with impact glass, a defense against hurricane season.
