An artsy community with suburban flourishes
Tucked along the New River just west of downtown Fort Lauderdale, the historic Sailboat Bend community is known for being visually appealing: historic, eclectic home styles like bungalows, Art Deco dwellings and Mission-style properties are scattered about. That’s not to say townhouses and high-rise condos are completely absent. But there’s an artistic, even funky atmosphere to the neighborhood. Arts venues, bars, museums, nightclubs and quirky sculptures are part of the experience. Realtor Heather Gregory, who lived in the neighborhood for 8 years, confirms that there’s a quality to Sailboat Bend that encourages a slower pace of life. “You can walk everywhere. It’s also very peaceful, very calm. There’s a river that goes right through it, so you always have access to water.”

Bungalows, ranches and condos in coastal styles
Bungalows and ranch-style homes dating to the early 1900s make up a core part of the housing stock. These can run in the $500,000 range. For example, a remodeled pastel bungalow from 1940, featuring three bedrooms, will sell at $550,000. These properties can have fenced backyards and driveways, giving a slightly suburban feel to the area. It’s not uncommon to see century-old trees, and palm trees add a dash of coastal flair. Condos and townhouses can be priced a bit lower. It’s possible to find a high-rise one-bedroom condo, complete with balcony and modern appliances, for $375,000. A two-bedroom multi-story townhouse unit with vaulted ceilings will start at $460,000.

Breakfast bites at O-B House
Publix Supermarket sits on the neighborhood’s south side, along 6th Street, where there are other cafes, bars and lounges dotting the landscape. Marti’s New River Bistro offers an upscale experience along the water, with charcuterie, wine and decadent desserts served on a white tablecloth. Breakfast bites can be found at O-B House, which is a café housed in a ruddy stucco building colored in burnt orange. Velvet Taco feels slightly more casual in comparison, with wide and comfy wood plank tables that customers saddle up to on stools. A roll of paper towels is placed on the table for cleaning up after noshing down.

Overall experience of this area is not that good. Rent is expensive for apartments that are not worth it in size and looks. Apartments and houses over here needs to be upgraded or renovated. The only good thing is that there are plenty of city buses that are very close and some stores are in walking distance.
