Easter in Dunbar
The historically black community of Dunbar in Fort Myers has seen quite a bit of new construction since 2020. Although in the heart of a growing city, 2 miles from downtown, the neighborhood has struggled with distressed housing, especially following Hurricane Ian in 2022. However, residents have always looked out for each other and new programs like The Greater Dunbar Initiative are working to improve neighborhood resources, job opportunities and visibility through actions like elementary school renovations. New construction is also increasing property values. Small churches can be found on nearly every street, and Sunday services are well-attended by community members. According to lifelong Fort Myers resident Ebony Simmons, a Realtor with LPT Realty, Easter is one of the most festive times here. For 80 years, residents have pulled out their lawn chairs and enjoyed the Dunbar Easter Parade like a giant family reunion. The streets fill up with local food trucks and vendors. “It’s very important for the families to have that time and be a community,” Simmons says.
Midcentury ranch-style homes and new construction
Dunbar is an urban neighborhood laid out along gridded streets. Lots are small, but most homes are less than 1,500 square feet, so there’s plenty of room for front gardens and backyard cookouts. Lawns typically feature a handful of mature trees, such as magnolias, palms and live oaks. Many homes in Dunbar were originally built between 1960 and the late 1980s, so midcentury ranch-style homes are popular. Some have a more classic Minimal Traditional look, while others utilize features from the stucco-sided Spanish Eclectic style. New construction homes have steadily cropped up since 2020, gradually introducing more contemporary and streamlined architecture. Overall list prices range from $150,000 to $400,000.

Second Eatery’s home-cooked flavor
Snacks, drinks and other quick grabs are a short walk away at neighborhood corner stores like Gigi’s or Thompson Groceries. Delectable restaurants are nearby, too. Serving soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts, Farmer’s Market Restaurant cooks meals with ingredients from the local farmer’s market. It boasts the city’s best southern food, but Second Eatery might take issue with that. The locally owned restaurant has a no-frills exterior and a menu full of home-cooked flavor. The closest commercial corridor, 6 Mile Cypress Parkway, is just under a 5-mile drive from Dunbar. The main road is lined by chain restaurants, from McDonald’s to Texas Roadhouse, and convenient big-box stores like Walmart.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to I-75
Fort Myers is a largely car-dependent city, and traffic can get pretty hectic during snowbird season when northerners head down to enjoy a warm winter. “In season, if I have to be somewhere in 20 minutes, I’ll give myself 40 minutes of drive time,” Simmons says. Public transportation is available at nearby LeeTran bus stops on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The thoroughfare also has a ramp onto Interstate 75, about 3 miles west of Dunbar. Via the interstate, Southwest Florida International Airport is only 15 miles away. The neighborhood is 3 miles from Lee Memorial Hospital.
