Old Fort Myers neighborhood next to a historic golf course
Fort Myers Country Club is a Caloosahatchee Riverfront community in the highly sought-after McGregor Boulevard corridor. While convenience is part of its appeal, with downtown just a few miles away and the neighborhood’s namesake golf course right across the street, it’s not the only draw. “It’s really the historic nature of the homes,” says Maggie Van Pelt, sales manager for eXp Realty’s John Garuti Team. “There are lots of new builds – big modern mega-mansions – all over the city, which is a blessing and a curse. It’s nice to see development in Fort Myers, but I’m in awe when I go down to Country Club because you can still feel the history and charm there.”

Slow-moving market for Old Floridian single-family homes
Spanish Eclectic, Mission and ranch-style homes line the quiet streets west of McGregor Boulevard. Most were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, but a few were built in the early 2000s. “These are older homes, without a lot of updates. It’s that Old Florida feel that brings people in and keeps them here,” Van Pelt says. Prices start at about $370,000 and can climb north of $6.5 million. Waterfront homes typically sell for more than inland properties, which top out at about $855,000.
On average, homes are on the market more than 100 days before they go under contract, much slower than the national average of 45 days. Though the neighborhood’s west side is most prone to flooding, all of Fort Myers Country Club falls within a flood zone, and flood insurance is required for most homes.
Many of the old historic homes in Fort Myers Country Club have been restored to their former glory.

Fort Myers Country Club golf, Jefferson Park playground nearby
Fort Myers Country Club’s namesake sits across McGregor Boulevard. The Donald Ross-designed course, known locally as “The Fort,” was built in 1917. The Edison Tavern, a restaurant added in 2008, overlooks the 18th hole. “Golf is big around here. We have something like 180 golf courses in the Naples-Fort Myers-Estero region, which basically works out to golf courses on every corner,” says Re/Max Realtor Adam Sheets, a Fort Myers local. He says The Fort is unique because of its history as one of the oldest courses on Florida’s west coast. Famous Fort Myers residents Thomas Edison and Henry Ford played here in the 1920s. For those not interested in golf, Jefferson Park is within a mile of the neighborhood and features a playground, gazebo and picnic areas.
After a round of golf at the Fort Myers country club, the Edison Café bar is a good place for a cold beer.

Downtown and Edison Mall are close options for shopping, dining
The historic Spanish Colonial storefronts and palmetto-lined cobblestone streets of downtown Fort Myers are a quick jaunt up McGregor Boulevard. The riverfront district is the heart of the city’s dining, small business and entertainment scenes. Musicians, artist vendors and pedestrians take over First Street on Friday evenings in the summer for art and music walks. The annual Edison Festival of Light brings thousands downtown in February for two weeks of parades and concerts. “Locals tend to stay away during those couple of weeks,” Sheets says. Traffic usually gets bad with the influx of tourists. For groceries, department stores and other big box retailers, Edison Mall and the surrounding commercial corridors are just a couple miles south. JCPenney, Macy’s and Dillard’s anchor the mall. There’s a Publix down the street, close to the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, which hosts concerts, off-Broadway performances and children’s shows.
