Downtown Fort Pierce
North 2nd Street and Orange Avenue are full of exciting restaurants
Downtown Fort Pierce has a growing dining scene, and residents often head to Orange Avenue and North 2nd Street to visit the wealth of locally owned restaurants. One favorite is Thirsty Turtle Seagrill, a small Florida chain with an extensive menu that includes fresh fish, fried shrimp, sandwiches and other favorites. “Their wings are amazing. It’s one of my favorite places to eat in Fort Pierce,” Coley says. When residents need groceries, they head to Route 1 to Aldi and Publix. Other national retailers like Family Dollar, Walgreens and Dollar Tree dot Route 1, and the rest of the neighborhood’s shopping is found at the local boutiques along North 2nd Street. Residents also have quick access to the Fort Pierce Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday morning year-round next to the Kilmer branch of the St. Lucie County Library. The market features about 70 vendors selling fresh meat and produce, jams, juices and more.Condos, bungalows and estates are available
Several large condo complexes on the Indian River offer amenities like rooftop pools, clubhouses and, of course, water views. The Island House complex is farther inland, so prices are more affordable, and residents can access a pool and clubhouse. Prices range from $135,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit inland to $690,000 for three bedrooms and three bathrooms overlooking the river. Those looking for a single-family home can find a mix of compact two- and three-bedroom bungalows and large island estates with four bedrooms, sitting on acre lots. Most homes fall within a price range of $220,000 to $400,000, while the large estates generally sell around $2 million. Regarding crime, Downtown Fort Pierce is slightly higher than the national average, scoring a 6 out of 10 on the CAP Index.Old Fort Park offers water views and lots of shade
Old Fort Park was once the home to the Ais tribe and then the location of the Fort Pierce Army base during the Second Seminole War. Today, it is a peaceful green space along the banks of the Indian River, covered in sabal palmettos and mossy oaks, where residents go to sit in the shade. Nearby Pinewood Park has more amenities, including a playground, tennis courts and a gazebo. The Art Walk is a popular regular event
Local art fans stay active thanks to the Art Walk, held every third Friday of the month. Local art galleries open, and visitors enjoy artwork from local artisans, live music and even drum circles. The annual Highwaymen Celebration Weekend happens every February and invites attendees to learn more about the group of local Black landscape artists who supported themselves with their work during the segregated 1950s.Fort Pierce Westwood Academy is the only STEAM magnet high school in the area
Kids often start their education at St. Lucie Elementary School, which has a C-minus on Niche, then head to Dan McCarty Middle School, which has a C. From there, they often head to Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet, which is the only STEAM magnet high school in the area and has a B-minus on Niche. It serves almost 2,000 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 22-to-1. There is one preparatory school and various faith-based schools in the area for families considering private education for their kids.Route 1 and I-95 get residents where they need to go
Route 1 runs through the neighborhood and connects residents to nearby St. Lucie. To travel to large southern cities like West Palm Beach and Miami, about 65 and 130 miles away, residents head just outside the neighborhood and hop on Interstate 95.
