Island living close to amenities
South Hutchinson Island is long and narrow, stretching along the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Indian River to the west. Residents here are connected to the mainland by Northeast Causeway Boulevard and Southeast Ocean Boulevard, which are used for work, school and errands. However, South Hutchinson Island is hardly isolated. “The bridges don’t get too congested,” says Diane Buccholz, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who sells throughout the area. “It’s pretty easy to run errands and get around," she says. The beach, Buccholtz says, is one of the main draws to the neighborhood, as is the convenience it offers. "You're close to Jensen Beach and Stuart, so you’re close to amenities,” she says. The area is a vacation destination, so locals do have to contend with an influx of snowbirds during the winter. “From January to April, it’s pretty active, but after that, it gets quiet,” says Fred Buccholz, a Realtor and Buccholz’s partner at Keller Williams Realty of Port St. Lucie.
A mix of stylish homes, many facing the Atlantic Ocean
Most homes here are condos in mid- and high-rise buildings, often overlooking the ocean, Indian River lagoon or the small lakes in the neighborhood. Two-bedroom units are the norm, though it’s possible to find some one-bedroom and three-bedroom units. Most are in gated communities with HOAs. Prices range from the low $300,000s for 1,000-square-foot units to the high $600,000s for 1,400-square-foot units. Amenities include clubhouses, tennis courts, community pools and fitness centers. Luxury units are also available, ranging from the high $700,000s to $1.7 million, offering panoramic views of the ocean and renovations with high-end appliances and open floor plans. There is also a mix of colorful beach houses and stylish New Traditional builds with three or four bedrooms, ranging from the high $200,000s to the mid $600,000s. Prices jump to $700,00 and can climb to nearly $4 million as the waterfront homes increase in square footage and high-end upgrades. Regarding crime, South Hutchinson Island rates a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Index, three points lower than the national average.
