A semi-rural neighborhood just outside Lima
Away from the city traffic and downtown hubbub, Fort Shawnee has a smaller-town feel, with modest ranch-style homes on narrow streets, shaded by oak trees. Though home to over 6,000 people, Fort Shawnee is also considered a township. “We're not a big, big city like Columbus or Cleveland or even Dayton,” says Jaiden Johnston, a Realtor who lives in the area and represents CCR Realtors. She goes on to say that the community has a friendly, close-knit vibe. “Everybody jokes about it— how everyone knows everybody.” Fort Shawnee shares a border with Lima, a small city where residents can pick up essentials and enjoy attractions found downtown. Though the neighborhood doesn’t have much in the way of shops and stores, there are a few long-standing staple restaurants as well as new places cropping up here and there. Residents also enjoy a highly rated school district exclusive to Shawnee residents.

Where suburban meets rural
From north to south, Fort Shawnee is a suburban-to-rural gradient. “You get a little more of a rural setting on the outskirts as you get closer to Cridersville, but I would say that most of Shawnee is comprised of little suburbs,” says Johnston. Whether in the north or the south, Fort Shawnee homes tend to be built on larger lots than those found in downtown Lima, with the typical lawn size spanning a quarter-acre to 1 acre. Popular architecture styles include ranch-style homes and single-family contemporary-style homes with stone facades. Prices range from $150,000 to $350,000.

There's a Walmart Supercenter on Allentown Road and the Lima Mall on Elida Road. Lima’s Finest Foods is a new and popular joint, serving an elevated take on pizza and burgers. “There's not too many restaurants, per se, right in Shawnee, so everybody’s pretty hyped about that one,” says Johnston. “They just have tons of options, and the guy who owns it is a chef, so all his recipes, whether you get a basic burger or something fancy, it's all so flavorful.” Another local favorite is La Charreada Shawnee, known for its authentic Mexican food and unique margarita flavors, like coconut cream and lychee.
Lima's Finest Food serves delicious fresh food made to order for dine-in or pick-up.
