Bass-Leesburg Civic
Subdivisions offer unified streetscapes, each with a different house style
Most Bass-Leesburg Civic subdivisions were developed as planned communities on flat, winding streets flanked by sidewalks. Houses tend to be in the same style throughout each subdivision, and some communities, such as Log Cabin Park, are even named for their predominant architectural style. Built starting in the 1970s, Bass-Leesburg Civic homes vary between Colonial Revivals, mid-century ranch-styles and contemporary cottages. Most are priced between $100,000 and $400,000, and prices vary depending on house size and condition.Casual restaurants span the area, from Liberty Diner to Deer Park Irish Pub
Corporate offices and industrial facilities line Independence Drive between Hillegas Road and Goshen Road in the northern end of the neighborhood. Besides offices and factories, assorted construction supply stores, wholesale outlets and car dealerships offer shopping and employment options. “Both locally owned and chain restaurants nearby give lunch and dinner options for those working different shifts,” says Gates. Liberty Diner, off Goshen Road in the northern tip of the neighborhood, serves casual New York-style American and Greek fare from a 1950s-style diner setting.Closer to the residential center of the neighborhood, family-run restaurant Raimundo's Pizza sells hand-tossed pies, pasta and sandwiches. The Tower Bar and Grill is a popular community gathering spot, and locals can listen to live music at Deer Park Irish Pub. Residents can get all their shopping done at Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center, where the nearest grocery store is a Trader Joe's. The shopping center also has other big box chains like Lowe's, Walmart Supercenter and Kohl's.
Fort Wayne’s only collegiate football team is right in the neighborhood
Students in Bass-Leesburg Civic are zoned in different Fort Wayne Community Schools depending on their address. “Zoning is split along Bass Road, so students living on the north side of the road and south side of the road go to different schools,” Gates says. Students who live north of Bass Road may attend Francis M. Price Elementary School, graded C-plus by Niche; Shawnee Middle School, graded C; and Northrop High School, graded B-minus. Students who live south of Bass Road may attend Lindley Elementary School, graded B-minus by Niche; Portage Middle School, graded C; and North Side High School, graded C-plus.After high school, students looking for higher education can enroll at the University of Saint Francis, which sits at the neighborhood's southern edge. The university’s Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium hosts the only collegiate football program in Fort Wayne, and locals often come out to cheer on the Cougars.
Hiking trails in Lindenwood Nature Preserve and the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo
Bass-Leesburg Civic’s near-downtown location means it’s easy for residents to visit Fort Wayne’s parks and trails. Basketball courts and baseball fields are in nearby Rockhill Park, while just south of the neighborhood is Lindenwood Nature Preserve. This 110-acre forest has four hiking trails: Trillium Trail, Oak Paradise Trail, Trail of Reflection and Maple Spur Trail. The half-mile Trillium Trail is full of flowers, with wild geranium, ginger, spring beauties and three varieties of trillium flowers. The mile-long Trail of Reflection is the longest and most-frequented path, leading to a peaceful pond. Veering off from the Trail of Reflection is the Maple Spur trail, which, as its name implies, winds through a maple grove. Oak Paradise Trail is just over a half-mile long and spans creeks with rustic bridges.Franke Park is another public outdoor space in the area. Spanning nearly 340 acres, it includes looping hiking trails, picnic pavilions and access to the stocked Shoaff Lake, a popular place to go fishing. Franke Park is also home to the Fort Wayne BMX Race Park. One of the parks other attractions is the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, home to wildlife that varies from tropical fish to tigers and orangutans.
A summer concert series is held at Foellinger Theater
Foellinger Theater, a venue on the grassy hillside of Franke Park, hosts outdoor concerts and seasonal performances. Visitors grab snacks and beverages at the concession stand and spread blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the show. The covered open-air theater holds events year-round, including a summer concert series and movie screenings.Getting to the city center is quick from Bass-Leesburg Civic
While Fort Wayne Citilink buses offer downtown transit, there aren’t many bus stops within this neighborhood. Instead, most residents drive along Goshen Road or Spring Street to reach Downtown Fort Wayne.
