Those looking to buy a secluded home surrounded by vast, wooded acres might initially be confused by Bullerman Park Forest, a Fort Wayne suburb. Narrow roads give way to sidewalks and grassy lots, where mature, decorative trees are the extent of the “forests” on this side of town. Although the homes here are largely ranch-style and split-levels, a second glance reveals subtle variety and charm. “The homes have a variety of characteristics; they’re not all looking the same,” says Realtor Andrea Gates of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. “And the area is very affordable.” Much of the restaurants and recreational opportunities are just a few blocks away. The community is an engaged one, served by an active neighborhood association that sponsors events and keeps residents up to speed.

Midcentury homes at a lower cost
A handful of cul de sacs intertwine along Stellhorn Road, one of the main roads. Buyers looking for quarter-acre, grassy lawns as their little slice of suburbia will be right at home in Bullerman Park Forest. Mid-century ranch and split-level homes face the sidewalks, which are wide enough to walk the dog or for a child to ride a bike. The homes have a touch of individuality to them, be it new paint, a designer stone facade, or an eye-catching oak in the front yard. Private driveways and attached garages are a good grab for this price range, which generally floats between $190,000 and $300,000.

Sherwood Plaza, anchored by a Target, lies at the intersection of Stellhorn Road and Maplecrest Road. Aside from Target, there is a Walgreens and a Big Lots for weekly essentials. Residents can dine in at a couple of locally owned restaurants. Casa Grille Italiano offers a relaxed, rustic atmosphere. Casa Grande serves Mexican dishes at the strip across the intersection, as does Uniq BBQ & Shabu, a Korean barbecue spot.
