A historic community with a bright future
You could compare Fairfield to the established oak trees that line the Fort Wayne neighborhood’s orderly streets. Strong historic roots hold fast to the community’s flourishing branches, promising new life. “There is so much history here,” says Holly Muñoz, president of the Fairfield Neighborhood Association. “But there’s also so much projected growth.” The Indiana neighborhood was established in the early 1900s by craftsmen and laborers who worked at Packard Piano and Organ Factory, which once stood at the corner of Fairfield and Kinsmoor Avenues. Today, two community organizations, Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Planning and Activation Workgroup and the Packard Area Planning Alliance, are planning for the Fairfield of tomorrow. The Packard 2030 Neighborhood Plan, adopted in May of 2023, was the result of several years of work by these two groups; the plan lays out quality-of-life improvements, such as expanding arts and culture programs, preserving the character of the neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, and enhancing sidewalks and the area’s overall safety. It’s something Fairfield residents are really excited about, according to Muñoz. “There’s a real sense of community here,” she says. “It’s a great place to put roots down and come grow.”

A neighborhood hub for recreation
An epicenter for community gatherings and outdoor recreation at the southwest corner of the neighborhood, the 4.5-acre Packard Park features a softball diamond, playground, pavilion and Indiana’s first outdoor courts for Futsal, a soccer-like sport that’s growing in popularity. “Packard Park is a source of pride for Fairfield and a highlight for residents in the area,” Muñoz says. Folks also foster fellowship at the thriving community garden on Packard Avenue, where neighbors gather to plant and maintain a supply of fruits and vegetables — “Plant what you can and pick what you need” is the MO here — and restock the community pantry of non-perishables, open to the public 24/7. “These places create an opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together,” Muñoz says, adding that Fairfield is a “melting pot of culturally and socio-economically diverse residents.”

Homes from the early 1900s
Fairfield’s quiet residential streets are lined with sidewalks, mature trees and early 20th-century homes in architectural styles like American Foursquares and Colonial Revivals. Many homes are on tightly spaced city-sized lots with back alleys for parking, and streetlights illuminate the streets in the evenings. Fixer-uppers can list for as low as $55,000, while newly refurbished homes spanning over 3,000 square feet can sell for $215,000.
